Lemon-driven acidity highlights a crisp and tangy flavor similar to a cross between cranberry fruit leather and cherry-flavored sparkling water. Being honest here it’s probably more accessible for many folks than the single block wines (which I love) because it shows more upfront fruit. It’s less austere, more forward, bursting with tangy, brambly blackberries and a dusting of coffee grounds. The tannins are tight and astringent, leaving a resonant finish that trails off a bit more quickly than the single block wines.

93pts Owen Bargreen

The 2022 Brittan Vineyards ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir offers ash and stony essence on the nose alongside red rose petals, orange peel and suggestions of menthol. Since 2004 when Robert and Ellen purchased the vineyard, it has been an ongoing rehabilitation project: replanting, retraining, and learning the unique landscape that has become Brittan Vineyard.

Vintage notes

2022 was a challenging but ultimately rewarding vintage. A cool, wet spring and late bud break left the Willamette Valley vulnerable to frost events in April. Our site is a little later than most, so our buds were just beginning to push when the frost hit. Our Pinot noir and Syrah blocks, while not unscathed by the frost, fared much better than the lower elevation Chardonnay blocks. Late season sun, warmth, and a particularly long rain-free spell in October allowed the grapes to finish ripening; an ideal end to the growing season.

Tasting notes

The 2022 Estate Pinot Noir opens with raspberry, blackberry and black current on the nose, accented by dried, savory herbs and barrel spice. Dark fruit, tobacco, brambles, fennel and five-spice on the palate lead to a long and complex finish. Pair this wine with pork loin with roasted fennel, or perhaps ossobuco. The warm start to summer gave us the shortest interval between bud break and flowering we had ever seen. In the second year of recovery after a permanent cover crop reset, the vineyard saw robust growth and lush foliage. A heat event in August didn’t affect our 4 acres of Chardonnay, which delivered a historically high yield for our vineyard. The wines from 2023 have good concentration, slightly relaxed acids, and are wonderfully approachable in their youth.

Tasting notes

Our 2023 Estate Chardonnay has remarkable clarity, verve, and precision. Golden apple, Bartlett pear, and fig notes balance the moderate oak, baking spice and citrus zest on the nose. There’s a lovely earthy minerality on the palate that beautifully complements the wine’s texture and acidity. Pair with heirloom tomato tart or creamy crab and chanterelle pasta.
