A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot (there’s a small amount of Petit Verdot) brought up in roughly 50% new French oak, its deep purple/plum color is followed by a smorgasbord of black raspberry and kirsch like fruits, spice box, dried flowers and licorice. With a huge mid-palate, sweet, sweet tannin, beautiful purity of fruit, and a great finish, it’s an incredibly sexy, satisfying second wine that will keep for another 10-15 years.

94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The brilliant 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos actually has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than the grand vin (69% versus 65%) in addition to mostly Merlot and a small quantity of Petit Verdot. As powerful as the Cos in terms of alcoholic clout (14.5%), the full-bodied, round, generous Les Pagodes de Cos exhibits lots of creme de cassis and floral notes intermixed with hints of wood/barrique and spice. Juicy, succulent and remarkably fresh and well-delineated, it merits considerable attention from consumers. It should drink well for 15-20 years. Oddly enough, the second wine is superior to many vintages of Cos in the 1960s 1970s and 1980s!

94pts Wine Enthusiast

Very rich, smooth tannins, super-ripe fruit dominate the wine. Tobacco-stained black fruit, briary and woodland scents eventually emerge; with decanting I suspect this would transmute into an attractive bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, quite symmetrical and extremely well balanced. It is not the most powerful or complex northern Médoc and yet there is surfeit elegant and poise. Enjoy this now and over the next decade. A real treat! The tannins have softened and the wine now has a beautiful satin texture. There is a subtle, underlying warmth that makes it rise far above its supposed rank in the Médoc hierarchy. In fact, 2009 Pagodes de Cos is on a par with numerous grands vins. Known as the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe” for his fascination with the exotic and his bold export ventures, d’Estournel built the estate’s distinctive oriental-inspired château, which remains one of Bordeaux’s most recognizable landmarks. His dedication to quality and innovation helped establish Cos d’Estournel as one of the leading producers of the Left Bank, and in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification it was ranked a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru).

Today, the estate is owned by entrepreneur Michel Reybier, who acquired it in 2000 and has since modernized both the vineyards and the winemaking facilities while maintaining its traditional elegance. Cos d’Estournel is celebrated for its powerful yet refined style, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot for balance, and consistently ranks among the top wines of Bordeaux. Its second wine, Les Pagodes de Cos, and the white wine, Cos d’Estournel Blanc, further showcase the estate’s pursuit of precision and excellence.

Blend: 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 1% Petite Verdot

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2424/3053/files/cos-destournel-les-pagodes-de-cos-saint-estephe-2009-750ml-984540.jpg?v=1762383964
chateau-cos-destournel-st-estephe-2014-750ml
Chateau Cos D'Estournel St. Estephe 2014 - 750ml

98pts James Suckling

If you want to know what St.-Estèphe smells like, this is it. This bottle was actually tasted over a period of a few hours. The word "cool" is one that reappeared in my vernacular now that the wine is in bottle. The estate is known for producing a more luxuriant and extravagant bouquet compared to its Saint Estèphe peers, yet this vintage is streamlined (to re-appropriate my original descriptor). It's unashamedly focused and delineated. It delivers intense blackberry and bilberry scents, again with a touch of iris. The palate is beautifully balanced with not a single hair out of place. The acidity is well judged and I noticed that after two or three hours, there was a faint vein of graphite that lends it a Pauillac-like personality, no surprise given that it lies just across the border. It will require several years in bottle for the tannins to mellow, but the result will be a very attractive, quite correct, fresh and precise Cos d'Estournel that will bestow two or three decades of drinking enjoyment. Its oriental facade is adorned with three pagoda turrets, all cast in a soft golden sandstone. Chateau Cos d'Estournel today covers 170 acres separated from Chateau Lafite, along the southern edge, by the stream between St. Estephe and Pauillac. The gravelly soil, over a flint, limestone and silicate subsoil low in nitrogen, has eroded over centuries to form steep ridges which perfectly drain the vineyards. The vineyards are planted 60 percent in Cabernet Sauvignon vines, 2 percent of Cabernet Franc, and 38 percent in Merlot. That vintage kowtowed to the crowd and yes, to critics. The 2010 is less compromising but more intellectual. It has a scintillating, pixelated bouquet with intense black fruit, asphalt and mint aromas – vivid and bright, much more focused and certainly less flamboyant than the 2009. The palate is medium-bodied with a huge chassis; a Saint-Estèphe clearly built for the long-term with enormous grip and enthralling tension. As before, there is a liberal sprinkling of white pepper towards the finish and is exceptionally long. The 2010 is the finest Cos d’Estournel until the more finessed 2016 comes along. It is a deeply impressive wine but it will appeal more to those that prefer classic Bordeaux to one boasting tons of fruit, as pleasurable as that might be.
