95pts Wine Advocate
The 2019 Rothwell Hyde Proprietary Red boasts lovely sage, thyme and rosemary nuances layered on a ripe bed of mixed berries. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes long and silky. It should be approachable upon release but drink well through 2040, as it possesses ample concentration and plenty of ripe fruit. While not a second wine in the traditional sense, it does incorporate lots that don't end up working in the single-vineyard wines, and it's priced below them. (JC) Inner quote mark (9/2022)
93pts Wine Spectator
Broad and rich in feel, with notes of tobacco, bittersweet cocoa and alder woven in and around a core of steeped black currant and blackberry fruit. Shows solid grip too, with a strong loamy tug through the finish as the fruit pumps along. Approachable for the fruit, but there's no rush here. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec.
93pts Vinous
The 2019 Rothwell Hyde is fabulous. Sumptuous and racy to the core, the 2019 is packed in inky dark fruit, blackberry jam, chocolate, mocha and spice. Silky, plush tannins wrap it all together. The Rothwell Hyde is a terrific Abreu wine that will drink well upon release. It is far more than a second wine.
Winemaker Notes
Rothwell Hyde may be the wine that most closely defines Abreu Vineyards, demonstrating what is possible when intention, hard work and Mother Nature come together.
The wine builds on fruit from Madrona Ranch and Cappella, sites hovering on the western edge of the town of St. Helena. With each harvest we discover how these two properties – barely a quarter mile apart yet entirely distinct - can be combined in infinite ways to make an intentional wine of purity and pedigree.
Blend: 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, 2% Malbec
