Winemaker Notes
To celebrate the upcoming 50 years of the ‘new’ Don Jacobo winery in Navarrete, the Corral family have released four rare vintages from the 1970s, Gran Reserva wines that have lain untouched for decades in the winery cellars since bottling. Made traditionally and evocative of a different era, these fully mature wines defy their age and show great charm and character, each bottle being a piece of living history.
This is a rare opportunity to own bottles of long aged Rioja and the perfect gift for anyone turning 50 in the next few years.
This 1978 vintage is the third Gran Reserva to be made by the Corral family at their new winery in Navarrete village, completed in 1974 and named ‘Don Jacobo’ in honour of its position on the famous pilgrimage route the ‘Ruta Jacobea’ (‘Way of St. James’) or Camino de Santiago. Aged for at least 36 months in oak before bottling. A traditional blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan).
Ruby garnet core and fading rim. Aromas evolve through a spectrum of sweet and savoury, reminiscent of compote, dried fig, spice and leather. A rare, delicate, Gran Reserva.
