93pts Vinous
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is packed with blue/black fruit, chocolate, spice and licorice. There's gorgeous depth, texture and complexity here. Readers will find plenty to like in this exuberant, dense Cabernet Sauvignon. The Napa Valley bottling is essentially a blend of all the vineyards Davies works with, except for the estate.
93pts James Suckling
Cherries, baked plums, roasted meat and warm spices on the nose follow through to a full body with plush tannins. Polished, well-balanced and delicious, with a creamy core of red berries at the center and a vivid finish with length. Drink or hold.
90pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A blend of lots disqualified from the various single-vineyard bottlings plus a bit of Malbec from Stagecoach—the actual proportions are 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot—Davies' 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley combines black cherries and cassis notes in a smooth, silky-textured offering. It's medium to full-bodied and less concentrated than the vineyard designated wines but still well made and flavorful.
Tasting Notes
This 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has rich aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and plum, with notes of cocoa powder, coffee, barrel spice, sage, and light herbal notes. A broad and juicy entry of raspberry welcomes the palate, along with black pepper and tobacco. The layered flavors in this wine are supported by well-structured and fine-grained tannins with a dynamic finish.
Winemaker Notes
The Davies family, proprietors of Schramsberg Vineyards and the J. Davies Estate in Napa Valley, presents its tenth vintage of Davies Vineyards “Napa Valley” Cabernet Sauvignon. Expanding on knowledge gained through the production of the J. Davies
Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the Diamond Mountain estate, this bottling represents an outstanding range of sites across the Napa Valley. Each vineyard is intentionally farmed to produce low yields, resulting in vivid, concentrated flavors. The finished
wine exhibits vibrant fruitful flavors, a rich texture, and firm tannic structure, allowing for enjoyment now as well as extended aging.
The Napa Valley was California’s first AVA, or American Viticultural Area, recognized by the U.S. government in 1981. Though just 30 miles long and a few miles wide, Napa Valley is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world. Home to
various microclimates, terrain and soils, it has a dry Mediterranean climate which is ideal for producing consistent wines from vintage to vintage. This climate provides near perfect growing conditions during the peak growing season with little rainfall, warm days, and cool nights. Throughout the growing season, the canopy is carefully managed to ensure optimal fruit development.
