96pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2015 Barolo Riserva Vigna Elena displays the ripeness and concentration of the vintage, with cassis, cinnamon, leather, and balsamic. The palate has notes of cherry pit, black tea, and tar. Rich and powerfully structured.  Audrey Frick

96pts James Suckling

Dried strawberry with tar and asphalt undertones, as well as dried flowers. Full-bodied, yet tight and refined, this builds on the finish to a terrific ending. Lots of dried mushroom to the fruit. Structured.

Valter Fissore has a talent for finding the perfect balance in every vintage, and he’s done it again with the 2015 Vigna Elena, a wine that stands out in this warm vintage for its exuberant florality and freshness. Scents of roses and violets, licorice and mint leap from the glass, leading into flavors of fresh red cherry and orange peel that are vibrant and layered. Impressively harmonious and detailed for a young Riserva, it will only get better over the coming decade.  Stephanie Johnson

95+pts Vinous

Intense, searing tannins Sweet red fruit, white pepper, mint, and tobacco come together in a wine that is not quite as refined as usually. This is one of the most tightly wound, classically austere Barolos readers will find in 2015, at least today. The searing tannins need time to soften, which will in turn allow the fruit to emerge more fully.  Antonio Galloni

Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Barolo Riserva Vigna Elena is medium-bodied and impressively balanced. The bouquet offers rose petal, white pepper, balsam herb, dry flowers and a hint of sweet tobacco. The mouthfeel is refreshing and determined, with a sense of austerity that culminates in an ethereal aftertaste. It is a Barolo filled with absolute class, lifted by a subtle texture of gracious tannins.

Elena is the daughter of co-owners, Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno. The vineyard for this wine was planted when Elena was born, and is dedicated to her, as is the wine. The label is a drawing of a chick that Elena made for her mother and father when she was just three years old. (She is now the professional designer of all the winery’s labels.) This label has been the symbol of the wine ever since its creation many years ago. This Barolo Riserva is produced only in great vintages.
