Now racked to tank. Will be fined and then bottled at the end of the year. Mid lemon in colour. The bouquet has weight and density, a broad-based orchard fruit, not especially floral. The sunny side of Folatières, but no signs of over ripe fruit. Quite firm acidity behind, the oak showing at the moment, needs to tighten up which the fining will do. Somewhat of a chunky style but good in that direction. Just a little bit of warmth at the finish. Tasted Oct 2023.

92pts Vinous

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru, the only white from the Domaine, was taken from vat having just been racked. It has a pleasant bouquet with lime, green apple and light tropical notes - perhaps missing the terroirs of its peers. The palate is well-balanced with a bright entry. There’s fine tension here, and I can appreciate the "nerve" of this Puligny, though it does need a little more mineralité on the finish. Enjoy over 8 to 10 years.

91pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

There are some five barrels of the 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières, produced from vines planted in the 1950s. Always a gourmand, expressive wine, it offers up aromas of green apple, sweet citrus fruit and buttered toast, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and satiny palate.

The unassuming but passionate Thierry Glantenay continues to produce delicious, sensual wines in his cellars in Volnay. In 2020, he put an end to roganage (trimming the vines) by tractor. instead, Thierry now trims by hand, with shears, letting the canopies grow higher (in emulation of his upstairs neighbor in Les Rugiens, Thomas Bouley). In the winery, Glantenay prefers to let temperature and alcohol do the work of extraction for him, keeping pigéage and rémontage to a minimum during classical macerations in cement vats. He presses gently, and élevage, without racking until the mise en bouteille, takes place in at most 30% new barrels.

Winemaker Notes

The 2019 vintage has turned out nicely at this tiny domaine of scarcely more than three hectares, and while the wines clearly bear the stamp of a warm, ripe vintage, they're purer and more elegant than the rich, carnal 2018s; a vintage Jouan and I revisited in the form of a bottle of Clos Saint-Denis, opened and finished in his storage shed while he smoked several of his signature cigarettes—a memorable way to begin the day, and proof, if further were needed, of the lengths to which I go to keep readers optimally informed. These are resolutely old-fashioned Burgundies, with everything that entails, and it's easy to understand why they have a devoted following among wine lovers for whom they offer not only considerable organoleptic stimulation but also the undeniable pleasure of indulged nostalgia.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2424/3053/files/Capture_bd2aa630-55f5-4faa-b013-24d5d466375f.jpg?v=1792533883
