Not everyone made good wines in 2017, a vintage that threw various curve balls at Rioja, not least the April frost, but Maria Larrea certainly did. This blend of Tempranillo with 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha is youthful vigorous and focused, with fine oak, a green undertone, lots of dark berry fruit and chalky minerality.
93pts James Suckling
A firm, tannic red with blackberry and walnut character on both the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a long, flavorful finish. Needs bottle age to soften. Try after 2022.
91pts Wine Spectator
A fresh and elegant red, which deftly knits sinewy tannins with roasted black plum, graphite and black cherry flavors and savory accents of beef bouillon, smoke and tobacco. Lingering and chewy finish. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2027. 12,500 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.
91pts Wilfred Wong
The 2017 C.V.N.E. Imperial is a well-built red wine. This wine offers aromas and flavors of savory spices, earthy notes, and attractive black fruits. Pair it with grilled lamb chops and saffron rice.
Winemaker Notes
Deep cherry red in color with reddish hints. On the nose there is a perfect balance between wild berries such as blackberries, raspberries, currants, blueberries and aromas from the barrels, balsamic, licorice, pepper, cocoa and light sweet toffee notes. The palate reveals a wine characterized by its elegance, depth of flavor and fine, velvety tannins. The finish is long and complex.
Perfect for pairing with all types of meat and cured cheese and to be enjoyed on its own.
