Natural fermentation and minimal sulphur use (as is standard practice at De Trafford), matured for 22 months in French oak and bottled unfiltered, this is a very low-intervention pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. 15% Alcohol.

Tasting Notes

Youthful medium deep red colour. Lovely fruitcake, dark berry and cigar box spice nose. Soft, gentle palate for such a young Cabernet with juicy dark berry, fruitcake and spice flavours.
Drinking well in 2017, but best between 2020 and 2028 with roast beef! Ideal in a Spiegelau
Bordeaux Magnum glass or similar.

Vintage Notes

A very good, cold wet winter ensured the soil moisture supply was filled and we had even bud burst. We had cool, wet weather at the beginning of the growing season resulting in a slow start and moderate healthy growth. High rainfall in November and January meant there was no need for any irrigation. Fungal disease pressure was high in November / December, but well timed contact sprays kept the vines healthy. Bunch and berry size was a little larger than usual due to the higher rain and less wind than usual. This resulted in a little less concentrated, more delicate fresh style. Moderate temperatures and no rain over harvest meant the development of attractive fresh fruity characters.

Winery Notes

The property was first purchased in 1976 by the Trafford family with aspirations to have a winery. Due to a (then) South African law regarding quota restrictions, the Traffords waited 18 years -making wine for family and friends- before the law was lifted in 1991 to expand as a commercial winery. The de Trafford winery was established in 1992 in Mont Fleur by architect David Trafford & artist wife Rita with the focus on high end red wines of great intensity & longevity, using minimal intervention production methods. A small family winery at the end of Blaauwklip Road between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains in South Africa. The labels reflect both David’ s former career in architecture (on the Elevation 393 Labels) and Rita ’ s eye and passion for design and her collection of silk scarves (on the Chenin Blanc labels), as well her own artwork around the winery.
