98pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Authenticity checks in as 89% Syrah and 11% Mourvèdre that spent 19 months in 70% new French oak. It’s always the most powerful, opulent wine in the lineup, and the 2016 is no exception, revealing a deep purple/blue color as well as a heavenly bouquet of black and blue fruits, crushed violets, graphite, liquid rocks, and chocolate. With full-bodied richness, a building sense of meatiness, ample tannins, and a huge finish, it’s another magical wine from this estate that needs to be tasted to be believed -October, 2019 (Jeb Dunnuck)

96pts Vinous

Bright purple. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, violets, incense and smoky minerals, and a sexy floral topnote builds in the glass. Stains the palate with densely packed black and blue fruit liqueur, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that become livelier as the wine opens up. Displays outstanding power and sharp definition on a strikingly long, incisive finish that’s given shape by steadily building tannins. 70% new French oak  -February, 2020 (Josh Raynolds)

96pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The deep ruby-purple colored 2016 Authenticity is made up of 89% Syrah and 11% Mourvèdre. It was made using 28% whole cluster and aged 19 months in 70% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple colored, it gives up a stunning perfume of luscious crème de cassis, mint chocolate, blackberry pie, fresh violet, sweet baking spices, coffee bean, marionerries and blueberries with accents of prosciutto, cracked pepper and olive. The palate is full-bodied and unfurls slowly like a peacock tail into the most gorgeous floral-tinged black fruits and well-tamed savory notions. Silky textured, it has a firm frame of finely grained tannins and astonishing freshness, finishing very long and layered. This is gorgeous! It’s perfectly drinkable now but will reward another 5 years in the cellar. Enjoy it over the next 20+ years. 403 cases produced. -February, 2020 (Erin Brooks)

95pts Wine Enthusiast & Cellar Selection

This bottling, which includes 11% Mourvèdre, is all about charred meat wrapped in purple flowers and fruits, with violet, lilac, black currant and white pepper on the nose. Black-plum, savory soy and elegant lilac flavors rise on the palate, where expertly rounded tannins ensure long aging. Drink now through 2031. -January, 2020 (Matt Kettmann)

91pts Wine Spectator

Tightly focused and well-built, with a lively backbone of tannins and bright acidity, braced by concentrated blackberry, smoky herb and cracked pepper flavors. Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2021 through 2028. 403 cases made. -April, 2020 (Tim Fish)

Winemaker Notes

Authenticity is a very authentic blend with primarily Syrah from one very steep limestone hillside at Paderewski and blended with a neighboring block of Mourvèdre to yield a supple, sultry and seamless wine that is classically Paderewski. Sometimes we co-ferment some Syrah with a neighboring Viognier block to add a little spice and freshness to the mix. This wine is deemed “The Bill Wine” because it has many gears – big and bold yet elegant and refined.
