95pts James Suckling

A really fascinating rosé with light plum, walnut and hints of toffee. Medium-to full-bodied with a light cream and cheese undertone. Unique experience. Aged and wonderful. Drink now.

2011 is a warmer and riper year in Rioja than 2010, which was a superb vintage, and the 2011 Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva suffers when tasted next to the 2010. It has candied fruit and a much riper profile but with the classical old oak and mushroom aromas of Tondonia. The color is less bright than the 2010, and there are already some brick-going-to-brown tones. There is some lightness in the palate with moderate acidity and refreshing notes of watermelon and rose petals. 12,000 bottles were filled in April 2017.

The Gran Reserva wines from López de Heredia come back to the market with the heralded 2001 vintage. Otherwise, when I asked them about news, the answer was "We continue making Viña Tondonia as we have always done." Basically, they are against change... From their 170 hectares of vineyards, 124 are currently in production, from which they produce around 400,000 bottles. They are the most traditional among Rioja traditionalists.

Winemaker Notes

The color of the Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva Rose is an onion skin color. The aromas are fresh and persistent. Smooth and fresh on the palate with body and complexity.

This versatile Rose will complement nearly any dish due to its freshness. It goes very well with spicy and hot food. Perfect with ham and charcuterie. It's also a great match with Indian, Mexican and Chinese style food.
