97pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2020 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille comes across as quite tight and mineral, with hints of pencil shavings and toasted almond accenting pineapple and lime. Medium to full-bodied, with ample richness and generosity, it finishes long and lean, with a mouthwatering edge to the citrus flavors.

Exquisite, with a generous, fleshy core of ripe peach and apricot flavors, which mingle effortlessly with salted butter notes of fresh pastry, lemon blossom and clipped herbs. The frame is silky and smooth, with fresh acidity weaving in and out, keeping the flavors fresh and focused. Drink now through 2030. 1,636 cases made.
A bright, light straw color, ‘Ma Belle-Fille’ bursts from the glass with vine blossom, pure liquid minerals, nectarines, white flowers, creamed hazelnut, pastry elements, and Reinette apple. On the palate, noticeable layer upon layer of stone, minerals, grilled bread, and jasmine are accentuated with an oily, full-bodied concentration. The finish is complex and expansive with a purity of lingering lemon curd, vanilla bean, yellow flowers, and nougat with hints of cinnamon and pain d’épices. Perfectly balanced and structured to age gracefully.
Made from grapes grown at the very highest elevation of our property, Ma Belle-Fille is just enough above the cooler La Carrière to crest the summer fogs and is usually the first Chardonnay harvested during each vintage. Layers of baked apple and nectarine round out the lean citrus and vivid minerality it shares with La Carrière.
Ma Belle-Fille was named by Sir Peter as a warm tribute to Emily Michael, his daughter-in-law and mother of the third generation of the family. Paul describes the wine as beautiful, generous, and complex, which we think is an apt description of our Emily as well.
