96pts Wine Enthusiast

Compelling aromas of Mediterranean scrub, fragrant purple flowers, wild berries and crushed stone lead the nose in this gorgeous red. On the delicious, elegantly structured palate, polished tannins seamlessly support flavors of juicy black cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and graphite all while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2021–2029. KERIN O’KEEFE

94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Tenuta Tascante 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Sciaranuova also comes from the Randazzo village, where the volcanic geology is quite complex, with new and ancient lava flows that crisscross and where viticulture transitions to important pistachio nut farming. This delicate wine opens to a mild ruby color and offers pretty notes of wild plum, dark cherry, tarry smoke and campfire ash. And yes, there is a distinctive touch of toasted nut or pistachio. The tannins are firm in this wine, revealing important staying power to the palate. Serve it with a cheese-and-honey platter with slices of fresh bread and savor those nutty notes.

94pts James Suckling

Aromas of red cherries, sliced strawberries and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied with subtle concentration that expresses an array of fresh black and red berries across the palate. Silky tannins. Fresh. Drink or hold.

91pts Vinous

The 2017 Contrada Sciaranuova Etna Rosso presents an incredibly pretty and lifted bouquet of fresh violets and geranium. Notes of wild strawberries and nuances of sweet spice and crushed stone come forward with time in the glass. In the mouth, it's silky in texture, offering a sapid display of ripe red and hints of blue fruit, all coasting along a core of juicy acidity. Inner florals resonate long over a coating of salty minerals, as a hint of nectarine slowly fades.

Winemaker Notes

Mt Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, is situated on the eastern side of Sicily and is home of some of Italy's most dramatic wine landscapes. The Etna DOC is divided into 132 Contrade, or wine districts, that are distinguished by different volcanic soil formations. The Tasca family works in four Contrade all located on the north side of Mt. Etna. Contrada Sciaranuova is located between Montelaguardia and Passopisciaro and is home to 12 acres of vineyards, planted in 2008, and more than 17 acres of chestnut groves. It is marked by its steep grade of 8.5% with volcanic formations with origins between 4,000 and 40,000 years ago. Tenuta Tascante Contrada Sciaranuova is 100% Nerello Mascalese fermented in stainless steel and aged partly in large Slavonian oak cask and part in French oak barrique.
