95pts James Suckling

Very pretty plum, chocolate and hazelnut aromas follow through to a full body with polished yet chewy tannins and fantastic depth of fruit and structure. Powerful for this estate. Needs five to six years to soften. Try after 2026.

93pts Vinous

The 2019 de Ferrand is built on energy and vibrancy. It offers perhaps a bit less immediacy than many wines in this vintage, but a good deal of potential. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, tobacco, blood orange, cinnamon and cedar give the 2019 its palpable sense of energy. I would give the 2019 a few years to come together.

92pts Wine Spectator

This offers the rich fruit paste profile of the vintage, but it's also accessible already, as cassis, plum preserves and fig notes lead the way, backed by melted red licorice and Christmas pudding accents. A loamy tug through the finish keeps it all grounded, so there's no rush, but this is more oomph than purity so don't expect a lot of evolution over time. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2036. 9,500 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

92pts Decanter

Coffee bean aromas on the nose with some liquorice spice. Fully tannic on the palate but filled with plush, juicy, chewy fruits so not austere just mouth filling. Mouthwatering acidity underpins the fruit and this has a great cooling effect in the mouth almost from start to finish. A serious style, well defined and sculpted.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Notes of smoky berries, spices and toasty oak introduce the 2019 de Ferrand, a medium to full-bodied, chunky, rather muscular Saint-Émilion that will require a bit of bottle age to tame its rather extracted style.

Tasting Notes

The nose is bright and charming with its fruity fragrances. The smoothness of the Merlot variety is balanced by the freshness of the Cabernet Franc grape.

Velvety, the palate showcases a beautiful framework: a tannic feel combines with a fresh and fine expression. Boasting a great elegance and a beautiful aromatic intensity, this Chateau de Ferrand 2019 is undoubtedly a promising vintage and is destined to evolve beautifully over time.

Blend: 73% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc

Winery Notes

Located a few kilometers away from Saint-Emilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux, Chateau de Ferrand was founded in 1702 by Elie de Bétoulaud and was subsequently acquired by Baron Bich in December 1977. Since 1994, his daughter Pauline and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët have taken over the running of the estate. Carrying out numerous improvements and innovations, their work was rewarded in the classification of Chateau de Ferrand, ranking as a Grand Cru Classe in 2012. Gonzague de Lambert has been the director of Chateau de Ferrand since 2017.

Made with great precision, the wines of Chateau de Ferrand are renowned for their structure, their aromas of ripe red fruit mixed with a delicate freshness and fine tannins.
