Winemaker Notes

Bodegas Juan Gil selected Monastrell grapes from old vineyards with low yields, planted on limestone and very stony soils, that are farmed in environmentally friendly way. The result is a wine with a deep red color, abundant ripe fruit aromas and a long spicy well-balanced finish, with toasted notes provided by the French wood.

Winery Notes

Aromas are of cooked raspberries and cinnamon. This is between medium and full-bodied with sweet red fruits (cherries and raspberry coulis), red hot cinnamons and strawberry sauce. It has the lightest amount of bark flavor which reveals its Monastrell orgin. Still youthful with a touch of drying grip.

Juan Gil Giménez, great-grandfather of the present owners, opened his winery in 1916 in the heart of Jumilla. At present, the Gil Vera family owns Bodegas Juan Gil.  Their vineyards cover an area of 120 hectares and they are located at 700 meters above sea level.  The soil is sand and chalk with large rocks and poor nutrient composition.  In spite of its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, the climate is continental with extreme weather conditions.  The contrast between night and day temperatures is often more than 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) during the growing season.  Rainfall is scarce.  Together these conditions provide the perfect environment for growing small, very concentrated berries.

Most of Juan Gil’s wines, including this one, are made from the Monastrell grape.  This grape makes full-bodied wines with a deep ruby-red color tinged by purple.  They tend to be fruity on the nose and the palate is dominated by plums, licorice, and cherries.  This wine is made from organic grapes grown on a 40-year old, low-yield parcel in the estate vineyards.  The grapes are whole-cluster macerated sur lie for 25 days, and then pressed and fermented in stainless steel. After that the wine is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels.
