97pts James Suckling

Cedary, super fresh and showing autumnal leaves and forest-floor complexity. Impeccably composed, brambly palate with dried red plums, red berries and cherries. Freshness through the finish and lots of energy carrying mellow flavors. Drink or hold.

93pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The current release is the 2001 Prado Enea Gran Reserva from a vintage universally acknowledged as great in Rioja. Medium purple in color, it displays an alluring perfume of cigar box, rose petal, Asian spices, incense, truffle, and black cherry. A wine of finesse, it has a velvety texture, succulent fruit, and a lengthy, pure finish. It is approachable now but will continue to provide pleasure for another 20 years.

93pts Wine Enthusiast

It's not easy to find mature Rioja from a great winery and a great year. This is all that; it smells of tobacco, earth and dried fruits. The palate is lively and not dying, while the flavors of cherry, raisin and marzipan are spot on. Compact and long on the finish, indicating that it still has another 10–15 years in it.

Winemaker Notes

2001 was a successful vintage for Rioja. The Gran Reserva, aged for 3 years in small oak barrels, shows a deep earthiness, sweet cherry and plum fruits.A harmonious wine and further ageing will see the components blend seamlessly. The Muga family regards this as the finest Prado Enea they have ever made.

Winery Notes

Bodegas Muga is a family firm founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño. The first wines were made in an underground cellar, until in 1968 they decided to set up their own winery in a beautiful old 19th-century town-house situated in the city of Haro. The Bodegas Muga outstanding feature is that it always uses the finest materials, combining tradition with the latest advances in winemaking so as always to give its wines the very best quality without losing authenticity. Indeed, it is the only wine cellar in Spain which employs its own master cooper and coopers, who make all the vats for the cellar as well as the oak casks. The winery remains true to traditional winemaking methods such as racking the casks by gravity and fining the wine with fresh egg whites. Bodegas Muga has succeeded in combining the purest family tradition with an updated vision of the future which has allowed them to preserve their own personality and character.
