92pts Wine Enthusiast
Yalumba's Muscat includes some lots from outside Rutherglen, but it's still an excellent example of fortified Muscat, featuring hints of caramelized cherries and a sweet, complex melange of caramel, toffee and chocolate balanced by citrusy freshness. Editors' Choice
92pts Decanter
Like Rutherglen Muscat, shrivelled and partially raisined berries are fermented briefly on skins, then fortified. Fruit is sourced from red and black (as well as Rutherglen’s brown) Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains mutations. Ageing in hogsheads and barriques dials up the richness (360g/l residual sugar), unleashing bourbon and marzipan-like nutty notes to its boozy Christmas pudding and medjool date flavor. Moreish, not mawkish, with savory chicory coffee notes and deftly balanced acidity.
91pts Wine Spectator
Sweet, bordering on syrupy, but nicely held in check by sufficient acidity, allowing the coffee, sassafras, vanilla and clotted cream flavors to glide effortlessly through the expressive finish.
Winemaker Notes
This luscious dessert wine is deep amber to tawny in color with olive green hues. The wine exhibits classic perfumed aromas of the Muscat grape – lifted florals of rose petal, ginger spice and orange peel, with butterscotch and fruitcake. The palate is soft, silken and luscious in texture, quite viscous and concentrated, then richly flavored showing a melange of raisined fruit, wood aged characters, fruitcake and spices, finishing with delicate and integrated spirit. This is an indulgent and seamless wine.
Serve with blue cheese, crème brûlée or pecan pie and a dollop of triple cream. Can be served chilled, refrigerate after opening to maintain freshness.
