93pts Vinous
The 2021 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet with crushed stone, pressed yellow flower and light slate-like aromas. Fine delineation. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, harmonious and orange rind and peach skin, assiduously spiced towards the finish that feels long and tender. This is another impressive Meursault from Monnot.
Barrel Sample: 91-93
93pts Wine Spectator
Viscous and smooth, with peach, citronella, orange peel, butter and baking spice flavors backed by a vibrant structure. Though complex, this is still pretty tight, with a mineral element emerging on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2033.
Winemaker Notes
Les Charmes is one of six major premier crus is lying at the south end of the Meursault appellation. The name likely comes from the word chaume meaning "field." Shallow limestone soils give a wine that is broad and rich as well as intensely mineral. The parcels belonging to Xavier Monnot were planted in 1961 and 1989 and provide plenty of concentration. Aged from 12 to 14 months in 30-35% percent new French oak.
Winery Notes
Xavier Monnot is a leading producer in Meursault whose winemaking style emphasizes purity of fruit, elegance, and complexity. Xavier can trace his mother’s ancestors, the Monniers, back to 1723, with six generations of winegrowing. Xavier took over in 1994 after completing his oenological studies and began replanting parcels with a combination of selection massale from old vines and new clones, and updated the cellar with modern equipment. Prior to the release of the 2005 vintage, the property was known as Domaine René Monnier (Xavier's grandfather). In 2005, along with improvements in the vineyard and cellar, Xavier began bottling his wines under his own label.”
