The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. It captures all the intensity of this site, but with a lighter hand and more acid-driven freshness than in the past, both of which work so well to balance things out. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, spice and licorice all build with time in the glass.

Hewitt's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the brand's designated 60-acre vineyard on the western side of Highway 29. Cedar and vanilla notes frame gentle cassis on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, moderately concentrated and softly dusty on the finish. While an excellent wine when considered in isolation, given the vineyard site and pricing, it has to be considered a bit disappointing.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon from Hewitt does well in the vintage and has a classic, elegant, satisfying style. Lots of red and black currants, tobacco, cigar box, and cedar notes emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a balanced, understated profile, moderate yet firm tannins, and outstanding length. It offers pleasure today yet will develop more complexity with 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for over a decade.

Our 2018 Hewitt Cabernet Sauvignon is structured, solid, and rich, with layers of depth and complexity. A deep crimson, cranberry red, shimmering color, with vibrant aromas and flavors of intense black cherry, black currant, blackberry, and pomegranate, invite you to sip, savor and indulge. All the fruit is supported by notes of hazelnut, crème brûlée, cinnamon, clove, allspice, and delicate Szechuan peppercorn, from the well-integrated oak character. Multi-layered and dense on the palate, you’ll find ripe, macerated dark berry fruits alongside perfumed violets, finishing with a mouthwatering freshness and a focused persistence. The finish is long, generous, and alluring, with chewy tannins, and just a hint of black licorice and graphite.

Incredibly drinkable now but also age worthy, this is a wine that truly exemplifies both the personality of Hewitt Vineyard and the remarkable 2018 vintage. Hewitt Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted to be cellar-worthy, however, if you can’t wait to enjoy a glass, we recommend decanting to allow the fullest expression to evolve and reveal itself within the glass.
