95pts Vinous

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva shows plums offset by spicy citrus, as dusty dried florals and hints of animal musk come forward. This floods the palate with silky richness and ripe red and black fruits. There’s a pliant feel here, even as this remains youthfully structured and poised. Saturating spices and tannin mount toward the long finale, which is a bit balsamic and rich through the close, with a hint of spice cookie and minerals lingering on. While still adolescent in character, the 2006 seems to be on the verge of its peak, and it should continue to drink exceptionally well for another 10–15 years.

94pts Wine Advocate

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino comes across as tightly wound and inward at this stage. With time in the glass the wine’s inner perfume gradually comes to life, even if this remains a reticent Brunello within the context of the vintage. Still, it is impossible not to admire the inner sweetness of the fruit and the impeccable polish of the tannins. All this needs is time, maybe a little more than usual in this vintage.

92pts Wine Spectator

Ripe and juicy, sporting cherry, raspberry, rose and spice aromas and flavors, all playing out on the elegant frame. This is a delicate style, favoring finesse over power. Still, there are tannins underneath that need time to integrate. Mineral finish.

91pts Wine Enthusiast

This is a nicely balanced wine with bright cherry and berry flavors that are offset by sweet spice, almond and toasted oak. The wood elements already show integration and will continue to diminish with time. Give this wine five or so more years of cellar aging.

90pts James Suckling

Truffles, blackberries and blueberries on the nose. Full body, with silky tannins and a fruity finish.

Tasting Notes

Strong ruby red tending towards garnet. Elegant, fruity, intense and resistant with hints of forest floor. Well-structured, elegant and harmonious, extremely persistent.

Winemaker Notes

A wine that has the ambition to demonstrate the power and elegance of the vintage, the dense tannic texture supported by the flavor and freshness, depth and harmony of Sangiovese from a great classic vintage in Montalcino.

Produced only in great vintages and in limited quantities from the oldest vineyards of the company, it represents the qualitative flag of the company: an expression of the concepts that they hold dearest to Canalicchio di Sopra Eleganza, Terroir, Depth. The grapes, for at least 80%, come from a single vineyard: Vigna Vecchia Mercatale.

Produced from vineyards which are over 10 years old, it represents the essence of our concept of terroir: an expression of elegance, depth, and freshness of our Sangiovese, able to unite its balsamic quality of the north side of Montalcino with the opulence of our lands.

Blend: 100% Sangiovese
