96pts Wine Enthusiast - Cellar Selection
Extremely vibrant and wild aromas of crisp plums, chaparral and cracked pepper erupt on the nose of this always exciting bottling. Black raspberry, dank herb and peppercorn flavors ride relatively creamy tannins and a waxy tension into the finish. Drink now–2042.
94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Pinot Noir Bloom's Field is the most red-fruited and floral of the roster, opening on a reserved note but ceaselessly escalating in intensity. The palate takes a dramatically powerful, saturated turn into a slow-moving, opulent yet classy finish that ceaselessly builds tannic power without adding an ounce of weight. Serious and unyielding despite its deceptively delicate framing, this merits time in the cellar to unwind but should evolve wonderfully over the next decade.
94pts Vinous
The 2022 Pinot Noir Bloom's Field is bright, punchy and alluring. Red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, spice and dried flowers infuse this savory, mineral-driven Pinot with tons of character. The 2022 is nervy and taut to its core, but another year in bottle should do the trick. Hints of white pepper, blood orange and pomegranate linger on the vibrant, translucent finish.
Winemaker Notes
Upon first pour, the nose offers a riot of ripe strawberries, both summery fresh and gently warmed strawberry compote—rich, thick, fruity, irresistible. After fifteen or so minutes the ripe fruit is joined by a group of earthy aromas—wet stone, peppery bramble, and savory herbs. The wine’s gentle and easygoing texture, while studded with polished but young and noticeable tannins, belies the tightly wound core within. While loaded with youthful zest, the wine will reward the patient as these elements integrate and grow with complexity over many years.
The quiet intensity detectable in the mid-palate leads inevitably to a long and persistent finish. Even in its youth the wine is complex and approachable, but will have a long life in bottle.
Vineyard Notes
Alongside Memorious downslope, Bloom’s Field spans the southwest-facing hillside that delineates the windward edge of our Domaine. The Monterey Shale bedrock of Memorious is prevalent here, too. However, the clay topsoils of Bloom’s Field are lighter in color and texture, particularly as the vineyard climbs the slope.
