97pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2019 Gran Enemigo Agrelo Single Vineyard shows the completeness of the vintage, a year with good yields and a cooler winter and summer. The result is a very balanced wine with full development of aromas and flavors, moderate ripeness and good freshness and balance. It has a fine texture, some chalky sensations and a dry finish, despite the fact that the soils have no limestone. The vines here are over 40 years of age.
97pts Vinous
The 2019 Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Agrelo also includes 15% Malbec from the clayish soils of Luján de Cuyo. Aged for 15 months in foudres, this purplish wine reveals enticing cigar ash notes alongside blueberry and plum aromas, with a subtle cedar backdrop. Dry, rich and plush on the palate, it quickly tightens due to its fine-grained, reactive, clay-like tannins. This long-lasting red lingers on the ashy notes, beautifully layered and crafted with a modernist touch in a slightly cool vintage
94pts Wine Spectator
Elegant enough to drink now, but with structure allowing for age, this version offers dusty rose petal and fresh peppercorn notes, plus a juicy core of strawberry and raspberry, with a pleasant wave of fresh acidity chiming in and carrying the flavors. Reveals subtle chocolate and gravel notes around polished tannins, with a lingering juicy berry finish.
94pts Wine Enthusiast
Ripeness and elegance define this Cabernet Franc from Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo. The nose is inviting and offers aromas of violets and cranberries. Finely-grained tannins and good acidity provide support to balanced cigar box, blackberry, cranberry and mulberry flavors that merge seamlessly with hints of earthy bell pepper and herbal notes.
Winemaker Notes
El Gran Enemigo SV Agrelo is deep purple with red highlights. Its aromas are intense and elegant. Cabernet Franc brings light notes of eucalyptus and thyme. Malbec brings notes of ripe black fruits, blackberries and black cherries. The oak aging gives a touch of chocolate and vanilla to blend. Excellent balance and elegant. This wine was made in honor of the old Pomerol style where Cabernet Franc was blended with the other Bordeaux varieties.
This wine pairs beautifully with roast chicken, turkey, duck, and other game birds along with seared steak and veal.
Winemaking is spread between the Catena family winery in the Uco Valley and Alejandro's own barrel room in his garden of Chachingo - The Republic - where his young son rides a horse among olive trees and where dogs and chickens share the grounds with the Vigil family and the winery.
