90pts Vinous
The 2022 L'Atto opens with a dark blend of dried violets, rose petals and mentholated herbs. This sweeps across the palate with silken textures and ripe red and black fruits, as hints of dark chocolate and an air of lavender form toward the close. It finishes with chalky mineral tones and a resonance of blackberries and spice, finishing off gently tannic and wonderfully fresh. Well done.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A Basilicata IGT wine, the Cantine del Notaio 2022 L'Atto offers bright primary fruit that remains nicely intact. It shows aromas of cherry marmalade, dried cranberry and bitter pomegranate juice. The fruit profile is mostly savory, not sweet, although there are slightly candied aromas with grenadine or blackberry syrupy. The tannins are tame, and you get enough richness and texture to pair with the little lamb brochettes loved in Basilicata's local cuisine. This is a 180,000-bottle release.
Tasting Notes
This is a soft, easy-going - but still traditional - style of Aglianico for 'everyday' enjoyment. It also serves as a good introduction to the Aglianico of the area around the Vulture volcano in Basilicata (as opposed to those of the Campania region). It has been awarded a "Slow Wine" by the Slow Food wine guide. Aged in older French oak.
Winery Notes
Cantine del Notaio is located in the rugged volcanic hills of Mount Vulture in Basilicata. Gerardo Giuratabocchetti embraces a passion for Aglianico that has been passed down through his family for generations. He and his wife, Marcella, also share a respect for nature and the environment, and the intrinsic vitality of their soil, which has ultimately taken them down the path to Biodynamic farming, which they feel brings forth the potential of Aglianico and wines of extraordinary potential.
In Naples and other southern Italian towns, a red wine of the Aglianico grape is a staple of the dining table. Fruity with blueberry, dark honey with velvety tannins, elegant lightness, say like Pinot Noir, allow it to pair well even with seafood. Aglianico grown on steep, black volcanic slopes of Mt. Vulture in northern Basilicata is particularly prized for its superior quality. Upon inheriting the estate, Gerardo took aim at restoring the ancient glory to the wines of the Vulture. Together with his wife and famed enologist Luigi Muoio, they restructured the winery to become the internationally recognized superstar they are today. “One of the finest Aglianicos I have ever tasted.” – Robert Parker, Jr.
