IWC #1 Sake Brewer of the Year 2019 & 2020 - Heiwa Shuzou
In its 37th year, the International Wine Challenge (IWC) is accepted as the world’s most rigorous, impartial and influential annual wine competition.
Tasting Notes
There are many kinds of oranges grown in Wakayama and Heiwa Shuzou uses NatsuMikan, Amanatsu (a yellow citrus fruit, a cultivar that originated as a mutation of the NatsuMikan) and lemon for this sake.
The NatsuMikan is somewhere between sour orange and mandarin - the flavor is bitter and sweet while refreshingly pleasant. The oranges are squeezed with the skin left on – you will enjoy the bitterness and the zest flavor in this rich orange sake. Refreshing on a hot day in the summer.
Mandarin pulp may settle or float so you may want to give the bottle a little shake before opening. Store and serve cold.
Brewery Description
Located in a Wakayama valley lies what was once orignally built as a temple, but now stands as Heiwa Shuzou - renamed after the end of the Second Wolrd War (Heiwa 平和 translates to "peace" or "harmony"). While the brewery has been making sake for four generations, the KID brand itself is quite young, only having started production about 10+ years ago.
