94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From a balanced vintage that delivers acidity and structure, the organic 2021 Chianti Classico reveals a shiny dark garnet color and a clean, mid-weight appearance. There's so much energy and vibrancy on the bouquet, which is a quality that Sangiovese achieves when growing conditions are ideal. Tangy cherry, cassis, blue flower, violet and soft earth give this wine an authentic sense of place. So do the elegant mineral notes. This is a special wine (that is priced very competitively).

93pts Vinous

The 2021 Chianti Classico is superb. Bright and explosive, the 2021 possesses notable energy and tension to play off its natural richness. In most vintages, the San Giusto Chianti Classico is quite open. That is not at all the case with the 2021, where vibrancy acids and tannins dominate. Readers should plan on putting the 2021 away for a number of years. Sweet exotic floral notes lift the finish.

93pts Wine Spectator

Dark cherry, raspberry, violet and mineral aromas and flavors permeate this supple red, which is fresh, delineated and intense, with fine harmony and a lingering aftertaste emphasizing the fruit.

Vintage Notes

Spring–summer saw a fairly dry climate overall. April and May were notably cool, but from then until mid-August temperatures rose well above seasonal averages. September brought a few modest rains and good day–night temperature variation, allowing for a slow, steady ripening. The grapes were harvested from September 22 to October 15. It is considered a vintage of great concentration and intense fruit.

About the Winery

San Giusto a Rentennano (a name of Etruscan origin) overlooks the upper Arbia River in the southernmost part of the Chianti Classico region. An ancient Cistercian monastery (hence its name, San Giusto alle Monache), later an indomitable fortress, it was marked, according to a 1204 treaty, as the border between the counties of Siena and Florence. Of the castle, the Guelph battlements of the surrounding wall , the massive barbican walls, and the underground cellars remain, still used today for aging wines in barrels. Owned by the Martini di Cigala family since 1914, it is now owned by siblings Anna, Lucia, Elisabetta, Francesco, Alessandro, and Luca.

Blend: 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo
