Winemaker Notes
An off-dry Riesling, with a light body, delicate and precise fruit flavors, and a slate-y finish
Appellation: Mosel, Germany
Vintage: 2023
Varieties: 100% Riesling
Alcohol: 9.5%
Viticulture: by hand; minimal chemical usage; working towards organic status
Winemaking: a few hours of skin maceration prior to grape pressing; gentle separation of must (only first and free run juice used); must settled for 48 hours; native yeast fermentation in stainless steel and oak cask; aging on full lees for six months without racking; one filtration before bottling; bottled under screw cap
Winemaker: Peter Griebeler
Ageing potential: will drink well for 7-10 years after the vintage
Notes: in the words of Peter Griebeler, owner and winemaker: ‘This Riesling is grown in the steep Devonian slate soil slopes of the renowned Zeltinger Himmelreich vineyard. Wild/spontaneous ferment in barrel and tank. 6 months maturation on lees. Tasting notes: notes of peach, pear, apricot and wild flowers. Food pairing: With its light and fruity nature, it's a perfect aperitif and introduction to the evening. Despite (or perhaps because of!) its light sweetness, the wine can also be paired with dishes that have a slight sweetness in their preparation – from seafood to roasted dishes, and especially with Asian cuisine. 9.5% alcohol by volume; 44 g/l residual sugar; 8 g/l acidity. It features 30-40% of botrytis-affected grapes.’
About the Winery
Heinrichshof, owned and run by brothers Peter and Ulrich Griebeler since 2014, is one of a handful of Mosel properties with a primary focus on making dry (Trocken) Riesling. While the steep slopes above the Mosel have traditionally been dedicated to sweeter styles, Heinrichshof is adapting to a new era of ripeness, and is making dry Riesling of great energy and detail, without any austerity, all for very attractive prices.
In addition to the dry whites, the Griebler brothers also produce beautiful Kabinett and Auslese Riesling, showcasing the piercing purity and lightness of touch of these traditional Mosel styles.
