Winemaker Notes
Reflecting the vintage, this is a very complex version of Rosso di Montalcino, marked by a wide range of aromas, from redcurrant and little red fruits to licorice and spice. It is sapid, mineral, with a long persistence and a great ageing potential: a Rosso di Montalcino to be tasted over the next two decades.
Similarly to the previous year, the spring was characterized by unusual warm and dry conditions, with the exception of May, when a little drop in temperatures and some rains gave relax to the vines. In a year that will be reminded for the shutdown of the world, we were able to focus our efforts on the care of the vineyards, efforts rewarded by the exceptional quality of the grapes. The Covid year will be remembered as an outstanding vintage at Le Potazzine.
A Rosso di Montalcino intended as Brunello younger brother, coming from the same vineyards, whose we declass almost half of the production that will undergo long natural fermentations of 40 days carried out only by our native yeasts and a 12 months aging in 30/50 hl barrels in Slavonian oak. Our Rosso is not filtered.
Potazzine is the Italian word for very colorful and vivacious birds which inhabit the Tuscan countryside. In Montalcino, grandparents and parents alike often use potazzine as a term of endearment for children. In fact, it was their maternal grandmother who affectionately gave this nickname to Viola and Sofia who are the daughters of Giuseppe and Gigliola Gorelli, owners of the estate and genuinely authentic locals of Montalcino.
