96pts Owen Bargreen
A stunning wine, the 2022 ‘Basalt Block’ is comes from estate Pommard and Dijon clone 667, 777, 115 and Swan clonal selection Pinot Noir vines. Stored for 12 months in only 15% new French oak, this is very inky in the glass. Boysenberry and iodine tones combine with smoldering stones, forest floor and shades of cardamom laced orange zest. The heady aromatics bring you back to the glass for more enjoyment. The palate is fresh and polished with a fantastic sense of verve and richness. Thrilling with its stony profile and bright underlying acidity with a seamless texture, enjoy this beauty now and over the next fifteen years to come. Drink 2024-2040

“The Basalt Block is a seven-acre bowl facing south in the centre of the Brittan estate in the foothills of the McMinnville appellation. All of the Brittan single-block wines have an aromatic intensity, and this one is effusive with dark violets, truffle, and classic boysenberry. The palate is built on a spine of marine salinity, which is spry, airy, and full of energy: fresh Oregon blackberries, sweet raspberries and a savoury dusting of dried herbs. Minerality wins out, though, and this wine combines a streak of wet stone, sea salt and a brisk acidity into the finish. Drinking Window: 2025 – 2039”
94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2021 Pinot Noir Basalt Block is scented of pomegranate and cranberry with nuances of aniseed, mushroom and earth. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with layers of spicy fruit. It’s structured by dusty tannins and mouthwatering acidity and has a long, latent finish. It will benefit from 3-5 years in the cellar.
94pts & Editors' Choice Wine Enthusiast
You should linger over this balanced and tasty treat. It smells like a marionberry pie cooling on a window sill, joined by notes of wildflowers and salted chocolate ganache. In a gearshift, the wine’s flavors are tarter, with crisp acidity highlighting not-quite-ripe raspberries punctuated by a bitter arugula note.
94pts International Wine Report
Aged for 10 months in 25% new French oak, the 2021 Basalt Block Pinot Noir presents a gorgeous glistening medium ruby core with a delicate blueish rim. Aromas of sour cherries, crushed raspberries, and forest herbs leap from the glass, followed by a touch of tangerine zest that adds a fresh, citrusy layer. On the palate, the fine-grained tannins harmonize beautifully with the mouthwatering acidity, delivering a balanced and elegant finish. 104 cases produced.
93pts Vinous
Decidedly floral and perfumed, the 2021 Pinot Noir Basalt Block wafts up effortlessly from the glass, mixing wild berries and cola with hints of camphor. This is potent, with a concentrated core of ripe red and blue berry fruit offset by stimulating acidity and sour citrus. The 2021 tapers off with gobs of youthful tension, further enhancing its core of grippy tannins, and yet the end note here is freshness. Give the Basalt Block time to fully come together—it will be worth the wait. Drinking Window: 2026 – 2034
