92pts James Suckling
A full-bodied red with black berries, dark chocolate and hints of fresh herbs on the nose and palate. Creamy tannins. 65% merlot and 35% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes. Need two or three years. Try after 2024.
92pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 La Grave-Figeac exhibits aromas of cherries, spices and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, broad but lively palate. It's a strong effort from a property in the ascendant, farmed organically by the former owners of Nenin and l'Evangile.
Winery Notes
Château La Grave Figeac converted to organic farming in 2009 under owner/winemaker Laurent Clauzel. Located at the border of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol on sandy clay and gravel soils over the limestone, it's neighbors are Cheval Blanc and Figeac in Saint-Emilion and La Conseillante in Pomerol.
The blend here is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 45 years. The 2020 is a bit more dusty and ethereal than the 2018 but still has some nice punchy fruit and the same herbal lift. This really shined with just a bit of air and is great for drinking now but will evolve nicely over the next ten years.
