93pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Gigondas checks in as 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre, raised in foudres, with the Syrah in demi-muids. It's a killer effort offering beautiful darker fruits supported by some meaty, garrigue, and iron-like nuances. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, gamey, exotic, balanced Gigondas that's just about overflowing with character. I love it today, yet it has another 10-12 years of prime drinking.

93pts Vinous

The 2022 Gigondas is gorgeous, bundling intense orange blossom, licorice, ripe strawberry, leafy tones and a touch of graphite on the aromatic composition. Tightly structured by ripe tannins and balanced by a lifting freshness, the full-bodied 2022 requires at least four more years in a cool cellar to mellow. That said, it’s an outstanding Gigondas worth seeking out.

90pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Crafted from vines planted on a combination of clay-limestone, sandy and stony soils, the 2022 Gigondas offers up aromas of cassis, raspberries, flowers and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with a juicy core of fruit, it's structured with an assertive tannic frame and robust tannins in the finish. Matured for 12 months in foudres or wooden tanks.

Tasting Notes

Rich and hearty mouthfeel with notes of red fruits and aromatic herbs (basil and laurel).
A mineral-rich and elegant wine associated with notes of truffles and flowers showing a gorgeously long finish.

Blend: 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 6% Cinsault, 2% Mourvèdre

About the Winery

Domaine de Cayron has been run by the Faraud family for the past four generations, opening in 1840 at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail.

The fifth and current generation is run by the three Faraud sisters. The eldest, Delphine, is in charge of sales, accounting and client relations, while Cendrine and the youngest Roseline, armed with their combined knowledge and savoir-fair, work together to produce high-quality wines while, guided by their father, Michel Faraud, remaining true to age-old traditions.

Vineyard Notes

Domaine du Cayron (Roseline, Cendrine, and Delphine) are the fifth generation to run this historic 40-acre estate in Gigondas. Most of the Cayron vineyards are found at an altitude of 300-400 meters, sitting in the shadow of the formidable Dentelles de Montmirail, where only about 25% of the Gigondas appellation is found. The family embodies the concept of one domaine, one wine, wherein all of the grapes from the 60+ year old vines go into one single cuvee. Fermented in concrete tanks built into the floor of the winery, the wine is then aged for two years in large foudres that date back more than 50 years. The sisters have an uncanny ability to transmit the aromas and flavors of garrigue (the mix of herbs that grow wild in the south of France) more clearly that perhaps any other winery in the region. The vin de garde’s unique profile speaks so clearly of place, it can only be seen as the true embodiment of the term “terror-driven wine”. Always affable and delightfully energetic, the sisters are too humble to admit what is clear to all who enjoy their wines: this is one of the finest properties in all of the Rhone.
