94 Points Decanter
A proprietary red blend of Petite Sirah, Grenache, Syrah, and Zinfandel aged eight months in 31% new oak. Orin Swift has opened a new, lovely tasting lounge in the town of St. Helena, CA and is worth a visit for those coming to the Napa Valley. Dave Phinney, the founder of Orin Swift, calls all the picks and continues working and honing these wines in the cellar. Rich black cherry, toffee, and caramel spices lead to a full-bodied wine.
93pts James Suckling
A deep and full-bodied red that’s powerful in black fruit and laced with fine-grained tannins. Blackberry, dried blueberry, black licorice and black pepper flavors backed by sturdy tannins for a grippy texture. A blend of primarily petite sirah with syrah and grenache. Drink or hold.
92pts Wine Enthusiast
This wine has been a long-time favorite for many years. It is titled Abstract: The Puzzle pieces fit so nicely together. The nose has aromas of rich, ripe Red plums, Blackberry jam, notes of spiced vanilla black tea, clove, and star anise. The palate connects supple, sweet raspberry, Pink grapefruit zest, maple, and lively acidity on the finish. (Best Buy)
90pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The least expensive Orin Swift red is the 2023 Proprietary Red Abstract, a blend of 49% Petite Sirah, 23% Syrah, 21% Grenache and 7% Zinfandel. Matured just seven months in 30% new oak, there's a hint of vanilla to the berry mélange found on the nose, which includes scents of plums, blueberries and cherries. It's full-bodied in the mouth, chunky and bold, with some dark chocolate and mocha notes on the dusty finish.
Winemaker Notes
An opaque purple core with a glowing mauve rim, the 2023 Abstract brings forth opening aromas of muddled blue and blackberries with a frame of dark chocolate brownie and seasoned leather. The wine enters with class, being soft and lush, with notes of ripe plum, boysenberry and Santa Maria tri-tip. Grippy, chewy tannins, the wine closes with pleasing sarsaparilla and blackcurrant.
Blend: Grenache, Petite Sirah, Syrah
About the Label
The label was inspired by a collage displayed in the living room of a designer in Milan. The winemaker spent years collecting the imagery and individually piecing the snips together. Nearly four years later, his original work of art was finally completed.
Winery Notes
Orin Swift Cellars, led by winemaker Dave Phinney, is a brand known as much for its creative and evocative expression of art on the front of the bottle as it is the bold, yet finessed styling within the bottle. Based out of Saint Helena, within the prized Napa Valley, Orin Swift features a portfolio of wines that appeal to a variety of senses. It all begins in the vineyard. Sourcing for the Orin Swift family takes Dave across the state of California, with special interest in the Napa Valley, Sonoma County and Santa Barbara area. He sets his sights on small lots within the most coveted vineyards while ensuring that only fruit of the highest quality makes it into the final blend. Every wine in the portfolio, from the vineyard source to the distinct artwork adorning the label, offers a unique point of view while creating a heart-skipping impression.
“There’s a soul to this business.. that soul isn’t just from the people who make wine, it’s from everyone who loves wines that make them feel something.”—Dave Phinney
