93pts Wine Enthusiast
Firmly structured and well-concentrated, this impressive wine needs time to mellow and gain more complexity. A tight core of black cherries and black currants is wrapped in firm tannins and dressed with subtle oak spices. Best from 2027–2037.
92pts James Suckling
Iodine and lead pencil with some currant. Flowers, too. Aromatic. Medium body. Creamy texture and a delicious finish. Juicy and fresh. Fine. Drink now.
90pts Wine Spectator
Fruit-driven, with raspberry, açaí and blackberry notes all bouncing through, carried by brambly, slightly woodsy grip, though there's enough fruit to compensate for that. Reveals generous anise and sweet spices on the slightly heady finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2020 Tapestry Reserve Red Wine is slightly pungent, with overtones of smoked meat, torrefaction and dark fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, richly textured and velvety in feel but with a hint of acridness on the finish. Drink it young.
Winemaker Notes
Our 2020 Tapestry Reserve is a perfumed and boisterous expression of this signature red blend, exhibiting the true artistry of blending five Bordeaux-heritage grape varieties grown within the Napa Valley. The seamless integration provides intriguing nuance, with complexity, structure, and balance.
The Cabernet Sauvignon, true to its “sauvage” namesake contributes notes of wild bramble berry fruits, with hints of blackberry, Marionberry, black raspberry and dark plum, alongside notes of dark chocolate, mocha, violet and lavender. The Merlot adds juiciness and mouthwatering black plum and black cherry, with soft, round tannins, contributing to the velvety-rich texture and plush mouthfeel. Malbec adds freshness and brightness with notes of cassis and rhubarb, while the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot complete the blend with darker tones and savory spices alongside lifted nuances of subtle black licorice, espresso bean, nutmeg, and allspice. Well integrated oak character enlivens the overall aromatic expression, adding richness and depth, with a pretty perfume that is musky and inviting. The generous texture is soft and smooth with rich tannins that support and carry the viscosity and weight of this elegant red blend.
A classic demonstration of the very best of what old world techniques and new world winemaking can offer – wonderfully enjoyable in its youth with potential to age gracefully with additional bottle aging for the next 10-20 years.
Blend: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec, 10% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot.
Vineyard Notes
Since its inception in 1990, our Tapestry Reserve has always been a tribute to our French heritage and a nod to the classic Bordeaux blends and Clarets that are world-renowned. We always source from a selection of specific vineyard blocks of top-quality grapes that give Tapestry the combined attributes of terroir expression and a round, approachable tannin structure. Roughly half of the Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on the famous western benchland of the Rutherford American Viticultural Area (AVA) and the balance from the Calistoga, Oakville, and St Helena AVAs. The Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec are sourced exclusively from our estate vineyards in Rutherford. Two styles of Cabernet Franc lend complexity and intrigue: one from cooler Sonoma Valley providing fresh acidity and a slight herbal character; the other from warmer Calistoga adding ripe and expressive red fruit notes.
