95pts James Suckling

Fascinating nose of pungent mushroom, almost truffly notes, together with ripe red berries and a twist of more exotic dates. Full-bodied with an excellent balance of ripe fruit, velvety but not chewy tannins and a long, tasty finish. You want to drink this now, but it will continue to improve with age. Best from 2024.

95pts Decanter

Facing southwest and sitting on Galestro soil at 450 metres above sea level, Campo del Drago is typically the estate’s last vineyard to be picked. In 2018, it was harvested mid-October, included about 30% whole bunches and saw its usual mix of 30% barriques and 70% large casks for ageing. It's more brooding that the classic Brunello, showing sweet spice and cedar-infused black currants and plum. Full but not rich, it's shored up by gravelly tannins and scores of acidity. The palate hints at forest undergrowth, mint and stone, though this will need a few more years to reveal all of its nuances.

94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Packaged in a heavy glass bottle, the Castiglion del Bosco 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Campo del Drago was born in one of the most beautiful panoramic vineyards you will ever see in Tuscany. This wine pays homage to this magical place. It delivers extra intensity and power that you most definitely perceive on all the senses. There is more fruit weight here, more black and purple berries and more soft concentration that drives a long finish. The tannins are still tight, so give the wine a few more years to integrate. Campo del Drago measures 1.5 hectares with classic galestro soils at 430 meters in elevation.

94pts Wine Enthusiast

Dark fruits dominate the nose, but savory undertones of tar, soil and graphite emerge over time. On the palate, dried cherries and cranberries continue, before a balanced finish of dark chocolate and candied orange peel. Tannins keep things clean, while acidity contrasts the plush fruit. Maisons Marques & Domaines USA.

93pts Wine Spectator

Though rich and focused on a core of bright cherry fruit, this vibrant red also evokes iron, wild herbs and Mediterranean scrub. This has visible but well-integrated tannins, remaining juicy and extending through the long finish. Best from 2026 through 2043.

93pts Wine & Spirits

This wine’s red-cherry flavors show a youthful intensity and purity, the fruit backed up by cool, ferrous tannins. The wine gains energy as the red fruit tones flesh out with exposure to air, gripped by chalky tannins as hints of dried herbs lend complexity to the finish.

Winery Notes

Situated in the province of Siena where the renown area of "Brunello di Montalcino" is found, Castiglion del Bosco encompasses approximately 4,450 acres of land, 125 of which are vineyards with plans to plant 15 more acres. The farm is located between the historic towns of Buonconvento and Montalcino. Given the truly magnificent geographical position of the estate, perched on a hill looking down onto the surrounding valleys, exposure is optimal resulting in wines of excellent quality. These are very exciting wines, new and classic at the same time.

Castiglion del Bosco was the first to produce and bottle Brunello di Montalcino in the sixties and today represents one of the most important properties of this region. Plans are currently underway to produce new wines and expand the existing cellar. This estate prides itself on the highest level of quality combined with respect for tradition. Claudio Basla, from Altesino, also consults at Castiglion del Bosco insuring the same levels of quality that we have always enjoyed from that estate.
