92pts James Suckling
If you find it hard to imagine how Southern Rhone wines can smell of Mediterranean herbs then you need to try this very striking Vacqueyras. It marries the herby character with a full body, crisp tannins and a zesty freshness. Quite seriously dry tannins at the bold finish. A cuvee of 70% grenache with 20% syrah and the rest a mix of mourvedre, cinsault and carignan. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
90pts Decanter
A fine, delicate style, light in tannin, with high acidity. Lovely piercing freshness and crunchy redcurrant fruit, finishing with some bay leaf bitterness.
90pts Wine Spectator
A perfumed, lifted style, with mineral purity pushing through violet, cherry and supple plum flavors. Lush and supple, with pencil shavings invigorating acidity to shore up the midpalate. The finish is marked by grilled sandalwood and incense. Drink now through 2028.
Winemaker Description
In 1974, Serge Férigoule left winemaking school with a longing to return to the vineyards. He went to work for Monsieur Ricard’s family in 1979 to oversee the vineyards. Without a successor, Ricard decided to gamble by partnering with Serge. In 1990, after Ricard’s retirement, Serge launched Le Sang des Cailloux. Vacqueyras had been awarded an A.O.C. that same year, a timely twist of fate that helped Serge’s wines become as celebrated as they deserve. All of Serge’s seventeen hectares rest on the Plateau des Garrigues, where red clay, limestone, and the galets roulés impart a terrific intensity and depth to the wines.
