93pts James Suckling
A succulent, driven and elegant white. It offers notes of passion fruit, gunpowder and warm herbs on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with bright acidity. Lively with a sharp character on the palate, yet it remains juicy, agile and comforting. Delicious finish with excellent length. Drink or hold.
Vinous
Only just bottled before tasting, the 2023 Sancerre Blanc provides tension. It's not as serious or concentrated as in previous years, perhaps due to the naturally high-yielding vintage; it is a little dilute in both concentration and fruit flavors. The chalky finish is fresh and citrusy. It's a little disappointing.
Winemaker Notes
A vibrant, 100% organic and biodynamic Sauvignon Blanc from a mix of flint and chalk soils in the heart of Sancerre. Aromas suggest grapefruit zest and gunflint. On the palate, the wine is pure and fresh, with plenty of mineral energy and citrus-inspired flavors. This is classic Sancerre—limpid and clean, with lots of freshness and lovely energy.
Pair with salads with Loire Valley regional goat cheese; oysters or other fresh shellfish.
Winey Notes
Regarded as one of Sancerre’s greatest estates and the first to be certified biodynamic, cousins Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent Vacheron, Domaine Vacheron produces consistently delicious and structured wines from flinty soils. Fruit is organic, hand-harvested, and fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts, leading to wines that show a serious sense of place. The cousins have become a benchmark for earth-driven Sauvignon Blanc worldwide.
The Vacherons without question are Sancerre’s leading winemaking clan. From the family’s pioneering work in identifying and exploring the region’s top terroirs to their leading position in biodynamic viticulture, there are few if any artisans today in Sancerre as exacting or as respected.
The estate’s peerless older vines, planted and cultivated by generations of family members, are cared for fastidiously. Yet it is the their singlevineyard wines—terroir-based selections recalling the painstaking work of Burgundian monks in the Côte d’Or—that have shown the world the heights and complexity that Sancerre can reach.
