A pale lemon and lime. Super clear. The bouquet needs a little coaxing, with a citrus touch, exceptionally precise and refined, like the Chassagne shows its class and style much more on the palate. Middleweight, very persistent. I can see how this would grow as you work your way down the bottle.
Winemaker Notes
This comes from a half-moon of twelve plots around the village, with the vines called Les Meix, just uphill from Domaine Sauzet, representing about 30% of the cuvée. Most of the blend comes from the Chassagne-Montrachet side, where deep soils give broad wines. Three plots are on the pebble-rich Meursault side. The wine is entirely barrel-fermented, with a discreet part being new. This wine brings together the best of “village level” Puligny-Montrachet, and indeed is text-book Puligny at its purest and most vibrant.
Winery Notes
The history of this domaine dates to the beginning of the 20th century, when Etienne Sauzet inherited and bought several plots of vines in the village of Puligny-Montrachet. Today the domaine has been passed to their daughter Emilie and her husband, Benoît Riffault, who continue to produce white wines that are among the most sought-after in all of Burgundy. Although the winemaking techniques have been modernized, M. Sauzet’s traditions of estate-bottling and of aging the wines on their lees for 10-12 months to “nourish them” are still respected and result in superbly finished, fruity, and full-bodied wines. After four generations, Sauzet is still synonymous with high-quality, elegant, Burgundian Chardonnay.
