92pts Wine Enthusiast
The nose sparkles with fresh yet savory aromas of lemons, limes, herbs and a nutty cheesiness, but also has a delicate, balancing floral sweetness. The palate is dense, as stone fruit joins more citrus and floral notes, before salted nuts usher in a tangy, mineral finish.
90pts Wine Spectator
A bright, tangy white, offering a fragrant range of orange and lime blossoms, blood orange and pink grapefruit zest, and poached quince and apricot. This is lightly lip-smacking and hard to stop sipping, with a snappy, mineral-driven finish.
90pts Vinous
The 2023 Grillo Timpa is airy and sweetly scented, wafting up with hints of mint leaf, green melon and confectionery spice. This smooths over the palate with fleshy textures and citrus-tinged white pit fruits as a tropical air of inner florals forms toward the close. The 2023 finishes with admirable length and freshness, closing with a youthful tension and a citrus concentration that tugs at the cheeks. Nicely done.
Tasting Notes
Straw yellow in color with green reflections. The nose has notes of white peach, with floral aromas of Sicilian Spanish broom, jasmine and orange blossom on the finish. On the palate, it is fresh, persistent and has a remarkable acidity that is well-balanced with the alcohol. It has a long and soft finish.
Winemaker's Notes
Timpa is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in the Sicilian word, “timpa” meaning strong slope. In fact, the vineyard climbs up a hill with a degree that exceeds 70%.
Winery Notes
Feudo Montoni has been producing top-quality wines on its historic grounds since 1469, and is currently overseen by Fabio Sireci, the third generation of a family dedicated to producing the most refined expressions of this long-cultivated terroir.
Today, the certified organic winery produces many of Italy’s most celebrated 100% indigenous varietals—Perricone, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto, Grillo, Inzolia and Passito—in addition to the purest expression of Nero d’Avola.
Vineyard Notes
For centuries, the durum wheat fields have contributed to a “natural isolation” of Montoni’s high-altitude vineyards from the rest of the landscape, creating “an island within an island,” where the ancient grape varieties are protected.
