92pts James Suckling
A balanced, vivid and succulent Sancerre, proposing aromas of warm herbs, sliced pears and some lime. It’s medium-bodied, precise and lively with bright acidity. Salivating and savory finish.
92pts Wilfred Wong of Wine
The 2023 Henri Bourgeois La Cote Monts Damnes is a pure example of Sancerre. This wine exhibits aromas and flavors of chalk, earth, and rocks-in-the-desert. Pair it with grilled scallops.
90pts Vinous
Tasted a week before bottling in July 2024, the 2023 La Cote des Monts Damnés is a rather delicate style of this steep vineyard compared with the more muscular 2022. It focuses on pure, fresh fruit and elegance. This wine has been hands-off and made in stainless steel to concentrate on fruit purity. A tender flesh on the mid-palate plumps up its light feet expression. The acidity is only gently fresh rather than racy, but the chalky nature of its texture, a key to the Monts Damnés wines, offers line and length. This will hit the market in the fall of 2024. Expect a new, more modern label. It's also organic.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in color. Delicate, slightly exotic aromas. On the palate, fresh and crisp aromas of blood orange, iodine and mineral/chalky lengths. Complex, this wine offers compelling
aromas of blood orange and a whiff of sea air. A generous nature confirmed by a juicy palate with tones of mango, and a mineral, chalky finish that makes this wine a gastronomic Sancerre.
Vineyard Notes
The vines are grown on the famous Côte des Monts Damnés, which has been cultivated since the 10th century. Its south-facing Kimmeridgian marls terroir is made of thousands of small commashaped oyster shells (ostrea virgula). Yields are deliberately low, with
high-density cultivation and grass between the rows.
