The 2017 Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon Vinya La Scala from old vines in Penedès was aged two years in barrel and three in bottle. It opens with roasted pepper, ash, black fruit and well-defined oak notes of vanilla and cedar. Sunny and intense in style, it is dry, structured and balanced, finishing with grippy tannins and chalk. A classic solar Cabernet.

Tasting Notes

In 1963, Jean Leon realized his dream by establishing a winery that would bear his name. He became one of the pioneers in introducing French grape varieties to the Penedès region. In this artwork illustrating the 2017 vintage, Gerard Sala immerses us in the beauty of our surroundings through the pristine natural landscape. An explosion and perfect combination of vibrant colors reminds us of the importance of what is most essential. The wine has aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, followed by a minimum of three years of bottle aging.

The result is a wine that stands out for its aromatic intensity. On the palate, it is voluptuous and concentrated, with rounded tannins and balanced acidity, making it long and persistent. Certified as a Qualified Estate Wine. Jean Leon Vinya La Scala belongs to the  Jean Leon Winery .

About the Wine

The launch of the new vintage of our most iconic wine, Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2017, has arrived, and this time it brings with it a work that pays tribute to one of the great Catalan artists: Gerard Sala i Rosselló. 

As some of you may know, this wine is the winery’s flagship and is made only in those years when the harvest is exceptional. In each new vintage, we choose an artist to illustrate the label of this new vintage. 

This year, the work of artist Gerard Sala chosen to illustrate the 2017 vintage is an explosion of colours full of strength, in a perfect combination that symbolises the natural landscape in its purest state, immersing us in the beauty of what surrounds us and reminding us of the importance of what is most essential. For the artist, nature is an intangible element present in all the cycles of life.

Jean Leon Vinya La Scala is much more than a limited production organic cabernet sauvignon wine; it is the ultimate expression of a singular land and dedication to a tradition that began in 1963. Sourced from an 8-hectare plot of clay-limestone soils, planted by Jean Leon and his winemaker Jaume Rovira, this wine has achieved the prestigious ‘Vi de Finca Qualificada’ certification.

This Gran Reserva is named after the restaurant that Jean Leon founded in Beverly Hills. La Scala was the local meeting point for celebrities during the Golden Age of Hollywood, such as Marilyn Monroe, immortalized on the label of this 2003 vintage according to the artist Josep Maria Subirachs' artistic vision.

Vinya La Scala holds the Single Estate Wine certification, meaning, in winemaking terms, that it is produced from a vineyard with specific features that confer unique characteristics to the wine and a microclimate that favours its maximum expression.
