98pts Jeb Dunnuck
Based on 35% Grenache, 32% Carignan, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 47% new oak, the 2017 Audacious reveals a ruby hue to go with a perfumed nose of blueberries, wild strawberries, new leather, flowery incense, and herbes de Provence. Gorgeous on the palate as well, with full-bodied richness, a weightless texture, and no hard edges, it will drink brilliantly over the coming 7-8 years, if not longer. It's in the same class as the brilliant 2016 and should be snatched up by readers!
94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2017 Audacious is composed of 35% Grenache, 32% Carignan, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Syrah, aged 19 months in 47% new oak. Medium to deep ruby-purple in the glass, it's scented of cranberry sauce, Italian plums, marionberry and boysenberry with accents of blood orange, underbrush, oolong tea, pencil shavings, wild thyme and peppered meats. The medium-bodied, floral-laced palate is silky, grainy and juicy with a very long, layered finish.
Philipp Pfunder was assistant winemaker at Law Estate from 2016 to 2019—in 2019 he became head winemaker. He’s worked at a broad range of wineries, including Kumeu River in New Zealand, Château Angélus in Bordeaux and Screaming Eagle in Napa.
The essential power and finesse embrace a perfect transition of tannin, acid and opulence in the 2017 Audacious. This Priorat inspired individual, unfurls cosmic layers of red and dark fruits, baking chocolate, hints of crushed flowers and wet river stone. In a proverbial sense, this wine is the harmony of an everlasting yin and yang of texture, tension, aromatics and flavors…making it nearly impossible to put down!
