95pts James Suckling

A silky and pretty wine with sliced berry, light chocolate powder and hazelnut. Medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins. Lovely cedar, sandalwood and tobacco flavors at the finish. A beauty. Drink now.

95pts Wine Spectator

A light smoky, sandalwood aroma leads off, followed by flavors of cherry, blackberry, iron, tea and burnished leather. Ripe, complex and balanced, with well-integrated tannins and a lingering aftertaste of smoke and autumn woods. Drink now through 2030.

93pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Released one decade after the harvest, the 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Dieci is a one-off wine meant to celebrate an exceptional vintage. The aging process sees 48 months in large Slavonian oak casks and the wine then rests in the bottle for the remaining years before its release. Only 8,000 bottles are available. The bouquet clearly shows tertiary aromas of licorice and tar, but the wine also has dark berry and dried cherry at its core. The finish is smooth and silky. The tannins have had considerable time to integrate. The wine still has life within and should continue its slow evolution. Drink 2017 – 2025.

93pts Vinous

Pertimali’s 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Dieci leads off with balsamic-infused black cherry and sweet strawberry, along with minty herbs, as notes of damp earth, crushed stone, and dried floral tones build. On the palate, soft, almost-fleshy textures usher in ripe red and black fruits, giving way to saturating minerality and spice, with slow-mounting tannins firming the experience, as inner florals toward the close provide lift. There are depths here that are yet unseen, the wine having been reserved in barrels for this release, yet I don’t find that the extended aging gets at all in the way; instead it balances the ripeness of the vintage. Even with its tannic clout, the 2007 Dieci is drinking beautifully today, and I expect that it would open even further if decanted. Fans of the Pertimali style will not be disappointed. 2020 – 2032.

92pts Wine Enthusiast

This just-released ten-year-old selection opens with inviting aromas of plum, leather, underbrush and tobacco. The approachable enveloping palate doles out mouthfuls of mature black cherry, grilled herb, cured meat, truffle and a hint of licorice framed in supple tannins. It has hit its ideal drinking window so enjoy soon.

Tasting Notes

Deep and complex, with black cherry flavours and silky tannins. Ripe berries and flowers on the nose, with an intense minerality. Rich and elegant.

Winemaker Notes

The 2015 Livio Sassetti Brunello di Montalcino Pertimali is full-bodied, complex, elegant and well balanced. The nose is intense with refined fragrances of ripe fruit, violets, spices. The palate is characterized by minerality that concludes with a long finish.

Pair this wine with red meats and homemade pasta.

About the Winery

For over a century, four generations of the Sassetti family have farmed and made wine in Montalcino.  Livio worked the historic property through the late 1970s, then purchased the 16-hectare (39.53 acres)  Podere Pertimali vineyard. The now–famous Podere is in the Montosoli area, north of Montalcino, an area recognized for the cultivation of the Sangiovese grape.

In 1967, Livio was among the founders of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, which was the same year the DOC(G) system was written into law. In 1968 he built a terracotta wall in his cellar to preserve the old vintages of the wines produced by the family.  Today, that collection consists of almost 1,000 bottles, with vintages dating back to 1915.   Dedicated to the land, Livio has over time rehabilitated and expanded the vineyards, preserving the genetic heritage of the old vines and preserving the primigenial characteristics.

In 1999, the Sassetti family acquired La Querciolina a beautiful property located in the Maremma within the Montecucco DOC. They also work with a small property in Colle Argento located in the Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG region.

Today, the estates are managed by Lorenzo Sassetti, Livio’s son, fourth generation family member and acclaimed winemaker. Together with his wife Sabina they passionately uphold the family name and reputation. Lorenzo’s wines have deep roots in their respective terroirs.  The wines are invigorating, aromatic, powerful styles that dance on the palate. Sassetti Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino is a collector’s wine. A true benchmark.
