92pts Wilfred Wong of Wine
The 2024 Bodegas Rectoral de Amandi “Matilda” is an elegant red wine from Ribeira Sacra, showing a medium ruby color in the glass. It opens with fragrant red cherries, accented by an underlying note of sun-dried stones that speaks to the region’s steep, terraced vineyards. On the palate, the wine is poised and graceful, delivering bright fruit framed by subtle minerality. Its refined profile makes it a delightful match with a simply roasted chicken, especially one seasoned with herbs that echo the wine’s gentle earthiness.
91pts Vinous
The 2024 Mencía Matilda Nieves is 85% Mencía with 15% Sousón and Caiño, all from Ribeira Sacra. It opens with aromas of blackberry and blueberry jam, a dark-fruited profile and a reductive touch. The palate is light, with fine tannins and juicy black fruit on the finish. Its structure is agile despite the potent nose, making this a crowd-pleasing wine.
90pts James Suckling
Lightly smoky purple fruits and sour black cherries in a rather reductive manner. Herbal and subtly floral notes emerge, accompanied by a hint of white pepper. Fresh and juicy on the palate, it features medium body and fine, pristine fruit tannins. The finish is of medium length.
Tasting Notes
On the nose it is a pure expression of Mencia, delicate aromas of blackberries and raspberries with floral notes of violet and touches of toffee and liquorice caramel. On the palate it is persistent and long with a fresh entry and floral notes.
About the Wine
A forest fairy, a young woman on her rocking chair, surrounded by the idyllic landscapes of the Ribeira Sacra, leaves behind a trail of flavors evoking the unmistakable nuances of Mencia.
Matilda Nieves is one of the granddaughters of the founder of the winery, a family history, a present and a future that are bottled in this vintage where the Mencia variety predominates, providing the most intense and fruity notes, combined with the Souson and Caino varieties that they reinforce the intensity of the solor and refresh the elaboration. A selection specially created by our winemaker from grapes grown in the vineyards surrounding the winery in the Amandi subzone.
Winery Notes
Built in an old 17th century rectory and surrounded by 20 hectares of vineyards, the winery is located in Amandi, the founder's hometown in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra (in the Northwest of Galicia, Spain). This is one of the 4 areas in Spain certified as "heroic viticulture" due to the steep slopes and its ground placed in terraces that make almost impossible to cultivate and harvest the grapes.
Rectoral de Amandi has another 120 hectares of the vineyards distributed in different areas of the Ribeira Sacra, as well as, it counts with the collaboration of more than 300 local winegrowers that allow to maintain the tradition alive and the same caracther in the wines. The philosophy of Rectoral de Amandi is based on respect for the environment, the promotion of the local economy and quality and innovation as the main points to stand out, some examples of that are: the manual harvest and the production of vegan wines, the cultivation and caring of vines avoiding artificial fertilizers with herds of sheep that keep the land clean, weather stations with temperature sensors that provide useful information to reduce the use of phytosanitary treatments and the creation of our own yeastsfrom natural elements that guarantee the authenticity of the wine and allow full control of the production process.
