97pts Kerin O'Keefe
Aromas of dog rose, wild herb, camphor and dark spice come together on the stunning 2020 Paolo Scavino Ravera. It’s spicy and savory, delivering a core of raspberry compote accented by star anise, mocha and a hint of orange zest. Tightly woven, fine-grained tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2027–2032. Abv: 14.5%
95pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
With fruit from the village of Novello, this wine is more articulate and shows clearer aromas compared to some of the other Barolos in this set of new releases. The Paolo Scavino 2019 Barolo Ravera takes a little extra time to come into focus. There is dark fruit, dried cherry, spice and some light tarry smoke. With time, the wine begins to show more complexity and nuance. Some 8,200 bottles were made
95pts James Suckling
Compact, concise and spiced with berries, warm herbs, forest floor and crushed black pepper aromas. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, firm tannins and crisp acidity. Vivid and crunchy with succulent small berries and sour cherries. It has a transparent character to it at the core and a racy finish with good length. Try after 2028
95pts Jeb Dunnuck
Dark ruby, the 2020 Barolo Ravera is expressive and leads with mineral-tinged aromas of graphite, raspberry liqueur, sweet flowers, pine, and mossy earth. Medium-bodied, it displays more intensity on the palate, with an elegant but more chiseled feel, ripe tannins, even, energetic acidity, and a mouthwatering finish. It’s going to benefit from another couple years in bottle.
94pts Vinous
The 2020 Barolo Ravera is sleek, elegant and polished. It offers a captivating mix of the savory/mineral intensity of this site and the slightly smaller-scaled structure of the year. Black cherry, lavender, sage, coffee, mint and gravel abound. Elisa Scavino has done a terrific job softening the potent Ravera tannins. I can't wait to see how this ages. Drinking Window: 2026-2040
94pts Wine Enthusiast
The nose lifts out of the glass with aromas of crushed raspberries, cherries and sour plum alongside a captivating array of mixed spices and wild herbs. The palate boasts a firm structure that showcases the interplay between macerated wild berries and the earthy elements that are still developing. This well-made wine is striking in its balance and intensity. Drink 2026 - 2045.
93pts Wine Spectator
There's some flesh in this red to embrace the cherry, plum, earth, mineral and orange peel aromas and flavors. Juniper and wild herb accents emerge as this firms up on the long finish. Best from 2026 through 2045
Winemaker Notes
The Ravera cru in Novello has become one of the most sought-after vineyard sites in all of Barolo, known for producing wines with power, minerality, and long life. Paolo Scavino’s take is polished and focused, balancing Ravera’s natural structure with the estate’s sleek, precise winemaking style. The 2020 vintage brings freshness and definition, giving the wine a clean, architectural frame.
Look for black cherry, wild plum, and blood orange up front, layered with dried rose, licorice, and a streak of crushed stone. The tannins are firm and tightly knit, giving it the kind of scaffolding that promises a long evolution. Decant now for a glimpse of its potential, or cellar confidently for a decade or more. A serious, site-driven Barolo that manages to feel both modern and grounded in tradition.
Winery Note
Paolo Scavino is an historical winery in the Barolo region. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto from Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion.
Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family Estate. He started to work full time in the winery in 1951 when he was 10 years old. A young winemaker who inherited the passion and devotion for the land he belongs to. Through over 60 years of experience his focus has been to invest on important cru of Nebbiolo to show the uniqueness of each terroir.
Their work is inspired by the love and respect they have for their territory and they pursue purity of expression, complexity and elegance for their wines from the three local grapes Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo.
