93pts James Suckling
Aromas of blueberries, blackcurrants, violets, stems, bark and chili-chocolate. Rich and chewy with stewed bramble fruit and firm, grainy tannins. Bright acidity also cutting through the richness. Unfiltered and aged two years in wooden vats before bottling. Try from 2025.
92pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2016 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a field blend with 102 grams of residual sugar. This is a traditional, unfiltered LBV. It was bottled with a long cork in February 2021 after about four years in Portuguese vats. Crasto's LBVs are some of the best bargains in the category. You get low prices, aging ability and high quality. What are you waiting for? It is not always that they are the biggest or most powerful, although they have proven that they are structured enough to age well, but they are very expressive and nuanced. They are very much mini-Vintage Ports that can age, develop and become even more expressive. They just sing in terms of the flavor medley. This is another good example of that. Beautifully constructed, with moderate tannins for support, this is also delicious and able to develop in the glass. It is a pleasure to drink at that very nice price, and it adds some distinction as well. There were 24,269 bottles produced, plus some half bottles.
91pts Wine Enthusiast
Bottled unfiltered, this Port comes from 70-year-old vines. It is deliciously perfumed, softly textured with ripe black fruits and hints of dried fruits. While the wine can be enjoyed now, it will be even better with some aging, waiting until 2022.
Tasting Notes
Opaque in color, showing fresh aromas of berry fruit in perfect harmony with delicate hints of gum cistus. On the palate a solid wine, with a compact structure of massive yet elegant tannins that are well integrated with the berry fruit flavors. Balanced and lingering finish.
About the Port
The grapes used to make our Vintage Ports come from our best old vines. They are then foot trodden in old stone tanks called “lagares”. Our Vintage Ports are bottled unfiltered after maturing for two years in large Portuguese oak vats. When young they are usually a very dark ruby in color almost opaque with intense aromas of very ripe fruit. Combining in highly complex wines that have great longevity.
