The Debate 'Artalade Montanga Vineyard' Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

95pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade Vineyard comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of crème de cassis, chocolate box and licorice, with underlying plum preserves and cedar chest notes. The full-bodied palate is generously laden with black fruit preserves flavors, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a lively line, going long and earthy on the finish.

95pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade Montanga Vineyard comes from a site on Pritchard Hill and is one of the standouts in the lineup in 2019. Saturated purple-hued, with tons of red, blue, and black fruits, it slowly offers up more minerality, gravelly earth, lead pencil, and violet notes with time in the glass. A big, concentrated, opulent beauty, it stays balanced and nicely focused on the palate, yet it’s a sexy wine with the dial turned up to 11. All Cabernet aged 18 months in 80% new barrels, it has enough tannins to warrant short-term cellaring and will have 20 years of longevity.

94pts Vinous

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade Montagna Vineyard is a huge wine packed with inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, sweet French oak, espresso, cloves, incense and crushed rocks. This huge, brooding Cabernet packs a serious punch. I would give it a few years to soften a bit, but expect it will always be a powerhouse.

94pts Wine Spectator

Densely packed, with baker's chocolate and tobacco wrapped around a core of steeped plum, black currant reduction and blackberry paste. The grippy, warm earth–filled finish pulls the fruit along with it, showing nice cut and drive.

94pts James Suckling

Aromas of mulberries, dark plums, earth, bark and baking spices. Full body with plush tannins. Rich and creamy with punchy character. Flavorful finish with excellent length. A blend of 62% cabernet sauvignon and 38% cabernet franc.

Vineyard Notes

Artalade Vineyard is a portion of the Montanga Estate located on Pritchard Hill, neighboring famous estates such as Colgin, Chappellet and Tusk. Pritchard Hill is known for its volcanic and iron soils with a hint of clay. Artalade sits in a unique geographical part of the “hill” perched at the edge of the Vaca Mountain Range at 1,100 feet in altitude.

The Debate ‘Denali Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

97pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Denali Vineyard features a drop-dead gorgeous nose of candied violets, fallen leaves, Indian spices and tilled soil with a core of crème de cassis and Black Forest cake. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with bright expressive fruit, delivering energetic freshness and a firm line of ripe, grainy tannins to support, finishing long and perfumed.

95pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Denali Vineyard is juicy and lively, yet still plays in the ripe, powerful, concentrated style of all of these wines. Blue fruits, graphite, pencil lead, and graphite all emerge from this incredible red, which has full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It's another truly “wow” wine in the lineup from this team that readers will absolutely love.

93pts Vinous

Aromas of mulberries, dark plums, earth, bark and baking spices. Full body with plush tannins. Rich and creamy with punchy character. Flavorful finish with excellent length. A blend of 62% cabernet sauvignon and 38% cabernet franc.

Vineyard Notes

Denali is a west to southwest facing vineyard, at approximately 500 feet elevation overlooking Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the eastern hillsides of St. Helena. Comprised of various soil types including, gravel and sandy loam, and weathered volcanic ash, we are draw to this 14 acre site, due to it's early and even ripening cycle, and amazing concentration.

The Debate ‘Newton Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

95pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Newton Vineyard tumbles effortlessly out of the glass with notes of plum preserves, baked blackberries and cassis, with an undercurrent of charcuterie, black olives and dried herbs. Full-bodied, firmly structured and concentrated, the abundant black fruit flavors are accented with plenty of savory nuances, and the finish is very long.

95pts Vinous

Aromas of mulberries, dark plums, earth, bark and baking spices. Full body with plush tannins. Rich and creamy with punchy character. Flavorful finish with excellent length. A blend of 62% cabernet sauvignon and 38% cabernet franc.

94pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Newton Vineyard is more grippy and restrained, with perfumed blue fruits, violets, and gravelly earth-like aromatics. Full-bodied on the palate, it has terrific concentration, lots of tannins, and a great finish. However, it needs to be forgotten for a solid 4-5 years if possible.

Vineyard Notes

Newton Vineyard sits atop Spring Mountain at approximately 1,600 feet and has a true history within Jean’s life as it was his first head winemaking position in the US. Come full circle years later, Jean began working with them again in 2018 and his passion for a particular block “White Rock” led to Jean getting access to it for The Debate. High elevation, combined with amazingly diverse soils that are interspersed with natural forest, results in wines that are complex, layered, and engaging.
