94pts Vinous
Opening like a veritable spice box, the 2020 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana entices with its autumnal blend of allspice, clove, and star anise before giving way to steeped plums and sage. It’s silky and refined, with supple textures and ripe red and blue fruits that swirl across a stream of vibrant acidity. It leaves a pleasantly chewy sensation while finishing with fine-grained tannins and a staining of primary concentration. Wait a full minute and hints of white pepper still linger. Wow. While richer than usual and easier to appreciate out of the gate, the 2020 is balanced for a long and steady evolution.
93pts James Suckling
A solid, focused and compact red. Red berries, warm herbs, earth, mushrooms and baking spices dominate on the nose, following through to a full body with fine, slightly chewy tannins. Concentrated and dense, with a solid frame of tannins for the fruit and spices on the long, funneled finish. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2026.
93pts Wine Spectator
This red is expressive, with ripe cherry, raspberry, floral and wild herb flavors married to a supple texture. Well-structured and balanced, leaving a long, fruit-, iron- and spice-tinged aftertaste, with fine grip on the finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2026 through 2040.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
In the bottle with the white label, the organic Tenuta di Capezzana 2020 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana boasts a clear personality. The bouquet is very ripe in 2020, and you get soft fruit tones of blackcurrant and bitter plum. This blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon ends with a food-friendly touch of acidity and a mid-weight finish. You might want to pair it with cacio e pepe, given the wine's freshness. There are hints of black pepper on the close that seal the deal. This is a big production of 70,000 bottles.
Winemaker Notes
Bright, intense ruby in color with a nose of wild berries and violets, elegant and ample. Elegant and balanced acid. The long finish has an aftertaste of sweet licorice and coffee.
