95pts Wine Enthusiast
Barrel Sample. Concentrated and powerful, this shows that the vintage can produce fine wines. It is structured and solid, balanced by rich black fruits. The combination brings out a great balance, and promises to mature well.
94pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Only 1,000 cases of the 2013 Trotanoy were produced (about half of the usual production). One of the stars as well as a major sleeper of the vintage, it is an atypically big, rich, full-boned effort with enough tannin and depth to require 2-3 years of cellaring. There is lots of purity as well as a strong, underlying, earthy, iron-like component intermixed with plenty of black cherry and black currant fruit, and hints of licorice and truffles. This impressive medium to full-bodied wine is atypically concentrated and rich for the vintage. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.
93pts Wine Spectator
Quite fresh in style, with almost racy red and black currant fruit alternating with raspberry coulis and damson plum notes. A singed mesquite edge frames the finish, with a lingering echo of graphite. Tasted non-blind.
92pts Vinous
The 2013 Trotanoy is quite compact today, with only modest depth emerging from behind a wall of tannin. It will be interesting to see how the 2013 behaves over the coming year. Today, it is very hard to taste and to read. Rose petals, graphite, smoke and raspberry jam notes emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. The 2013 finishes with notable length and persistence, but is likely to require quite a bit of time to fully come together.
