93pts Wine Spectator

Stylish and elegant, with plenty to admire in the fresh mix of pear, pineapple, ripe and salted melon, dried apricot and orange blossoms. Details of candied ginger, lemon curd, lemongrass and toasted sesame seed linger. Drink now through 2035. 5,905 cases made.

92pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Sourced from the Oak Knoll District, Groth's 2023 Estate Chardonnay Hillview Vineyard features classic aromas of toasted grain, citrus and pineapple. It's medium to full-bodied, rounded and generous on the mid-palate, then citrusy and bright on the finish. It's a step up from the 2022, for sure.

91pts Jeb Dunnuck

Orchard fruits, melon, spicy wood, and subtle toast intermix with minty herbs in the 2023 Chardonnay Estate. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced on the palate, it shows a layered texture, integrated acidity, and a clean finish. Drink this well-made Chardonnay over the next 4-5 years.

Tasting Notes

This wine dances with enticing notes of orange zest, toasted hazelnut, and wet stone, accented by hints of Anju pear, green tea, Fuyu persimmon, cardamom, and honeydew. On the palate, it unfolds with vibrant kiwi and lemon curd, layered with pineapple guava and pear, all underscored by a refreshing salinity and rounded out with notes of freshly baked bread for a delightful, harmonious finish.

The wine’s citrus and salinity pair beautifully with the sweetness and brininess in a
scallop crudo. As an alternative, try it with crab cakes featuring a touch of spice or duck breast with Anjou pear sauce. A creamy butternut squash risotto would also wonderfully complement the wine’s vibrant profile.

Vineyard Notes

In 1982, the Groth family took ownership of Hillview Vineyard, located just a short distance from our Oakville Estate. Initially, their goal was to find a high-quality Merlot to complement our Cabernet Sauvignons. Over time, as they worked the land, they discovered that the estate was also perfect for cultivating exceptional Chardonnay.

Today, this sustainably managed vineyard not only produces outstanding wine but also serves as the perfect place to raise a family and is home to two generations of the Groth family.

Winery Notes

Groth Vineyards & Winery was founded in 1982 by Dennis and Judy Groth in Oakville, Napa Valley, quickly earning acclaim for its commitment to estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery rose to international prominence when its 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon became the first American wine to receive a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator in 1989. Today, Groth remains family-owned and continues to focus on producing high-quality wines from its Oakville and Hillview vineyards, combining modern winemaking with a long-standing dedication to Napa Valley terroir and excellence.
