The Debate 'Artalade Montanga Vineyard' Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

RP 95 Robert Parker Wine Advocate

This Pritchard Hill site has yielded an exceptional 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade Montagne Vineyard. Scents of cassis and black cherries are joined by stony, iron-like elements on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is firm and tannic, requiring time in the cellar.

Drink Date:
2026 - 2040

95 Jeb Dunnuck

From a site on Pritchard Hill, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade Montagna Vineyard is a more medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet surprisingly elegant and seamless beauty that has ultra-fine tannins. It has classic cassis and blue fruits as well as some savory herb, tobacco, and spicy notes, and it shines on all accounts, with flawless balance. Despite being a Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, it's already approachable. It will evolve for 15-20 years. Maturity 2023 - 2043

96pts James Suckling

This site on Pritchard Hill gives an intense, tannic, but also racy, almost tangy quality that shows up as liveliness and focus. Red and black fruit, firm tannins and good acidity make a fresh-tasting, age-worthy wine that drinks well now but will only get better. Best from 2028.

Vineyard Notes

Artalade Vineyard is a portion of the Montanga Estate located on Pritchard Hill, neighboring famous estates such as Colgin, Chappellet and Tusk. Pritchard Hill is known for its volcanic and iron soils with a hint of clay. Artalade sits in a unique geographical part of the “hill” perched at the edge of the Vaca Mountain Range at 1,100 feet in altitude.

The Debate ‘To Kalon Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

97pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

As with the group of Cabernet Francs, to this taster, there's little debate that the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is the class of the field. Marked by buckets of black cherries, subtle dried-spice shadings and a hint of mint, the nose is wonderfully varietally correct and seductive. In the mouth, the wine is plush and silky, just a joy to taste, with a long, lingering and supremely elegant finish tinged with mocha.

95pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is another wine from Hoefliger that perfectly shows its terroirs. Sexy red, blue, and black fruits, violets, flowery incense, and smoked tobacco are just some of the nuances here, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, and velvety tannins. This superb, decadent, hedonistic effort will evolve for two decades if well stored..

The Debate ‘Harbison’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

94+pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A blend of fruit from the three blocks of this eastern Oakville site that The Debate draws fruit from, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Harbison Vineyard features mixed red and black cherries and gentle herbal threads interwoven throughout. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied and a bit sinewy in feel, not as rich or expansive as some other Harbison bottlings but still a fine effort, with at least a decade of cellaring potential and possible improvement..

97pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Harbison Vineyard comes from a mix of the three distinct parcels of this estate just off the Silverado Trail. It's a wonderfully complex, medium to full-bodied 2021 that's loaded with ripe red and black fruits as well as notes of savory herbs, crushed stone, and subtle hints of iron, with a near hint of bloodiness. As with the other wines here, it's impeccably made as well as perfectly balanced. Give it 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades.
