97pts Jeb Dunnuck
Lastly, the 2022 Chardonnay 3D comes from a sandy, 10-acre vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and was brought up all in neutral oak. Its medium gold hue is followed by a ripe, exotic perfume of honeyed stone fruits, orange blossom, chalk, flower oil, and brioche-like nuances. This beauty is medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and incredibly textured on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity, terrific mid-palate depth, and a finish that won't quit. Don't miss this beauty. 752 cases.
97pts James Suckling
A very tensile, fresh and mineral-laden wine that's tangy in acidity and has an almost crunchy, lively texture. Made from a singular section of the 3-D vineyard planted with Wente and Mt. Eden clone grapevines. Lemon pith, limestone, crisp green apples. So intense and taut, it is sure to age and improve.
96pts Decanter
A voluptiously textured Chardonnay from the 4ha site in the Sta Rita Hills, this Chardonnay is comprised of five clones, including the California classics, Hyde, Wente and Mount Eden. The aromatics are rich, as seaspray plays along with lemon verbena and lemon oil. On the palate, a briny note of ocean air cuts across the rich texture as flavours of green mangoes, honeyed apricots and roasted almonds all vie for your attention.
94pts Vinous
The 2022 Chardonnay 3D is a wine of real density and power. Wente and Mount Eden clone Chardonnay are so distinctive here. Apricot, white flowers, marzipan, mint and light tropical inflections build into the huge, enveloping finish.
93pts Wine Enthusiast
Evolving aromas of lemon-glazed apples grow more prominent as this wine opens on the nose. The palate is quite tense in structure yet bolder in flavor, offering golden touches of lemon, yellow apple and light toast.
93pts Wine Spectator
Apricot, peach, marmalade and candied ginger flavors are plump and juicy on an appealingly fleshy texture. Grace notes of Meyer lemon, satsuma tangerine and lemon oil add wonderful layers of complexity. Drink now. 666 cases made.
91pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Tropical-fruited, honeyed, nutty and menthol-tinged on the nose, the 2022 Chardonnay 3D is a voluptuous, powerful expression of the Sta. Rita Hills. The palate is rich and decadent yet manages to retain focus, finishing with immensely flashy ripeness. While this is passionately well-made, I can't help but gravitate toward the more chiseled bottlings in the lineup.
About the Wine
The primary emphasis of the predominantly sandy 10-acre vineyard is Chardonnay, with equal amounts of five clones planted (4, 76, Hyde, Mount Eden, and Wente, selection from the original planting at Nielson).
Only neutral barrels are employed. Whole cluster pressed Chardonnay. We don’t promote or prohibit malolactic fermentation, allowing wine to be in balance, bright, and elegant.
